In 15 minutes or so, Chelsea play(s) Middlebrough in the Carabao Cup. Wasn't that the Coca Cola Cup and the League Cup a few years ago?

ESPN+
that's the 2nd or 3rd cup, right? Called Carabao because the big teams don't really carabaot it?

Middlesbrough beat Chelsea, which looked full of faster and more skilled players. Too many Middlesbrough players as slow as a Mack truck, but they out-played Chelsea over and over. The ESPN+ commenters just tore Chelsea to tiny pieces: "Chelsea constructed by 1 billion pounds loses to Middlesbrough, players bought for about 60 million."

Looks like Tod Boehly and his partners need to import the backup front office from their LA Dodgers.

You are correct. It's always been the third-string competition - in seasons past, some of the main PL clubs haven't even bothered to take part...

As Chelsea implodes, again, my favorite Spurs have gotten Timo Werner as a backup striker, and Radu Dragusin ("Red Dragon"?) a center back they desperately needed. All at the beginning of the January transfer window.

And I, accidentally, keep imagining that it is time for the Nats to sign a free agent or two...snd not just Nick Senzel and a collection of minor leaguer.

Sporting Kansas City to play Inter Miami, on April 13th - so it's going to be Messi at Arrowhead...

Chelsea clobbered Middlesbrough yesterday in the second game of their series (aka "tie") in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup. Likely to be Chelsea against Liverpool in the final.

However, Chelsea, Arsenal, and both Manchester teams are skating along the edge of the FA's Profit and Sustainablity Rules (PSR). The rules say that a club cannot show a loss of more than £100 or so over a rolling three years. Everton was already penalized 10 standings points this year; likely to be charged again by the end of this season. All the "big" clubs, except Tottenham and Liverpool are in danger of penalty. That means they cannot spend the way they have spent...Chelsea's new owners, led by Todd Boehly, part owner of the Dodgers, spent about £1 billion in the first year they have owned the team.

Teams can off-set spending by selling players, in which the cost of buying the player subtracts from the revenue of selling. "Academy" players, those signed as teenagers to their first contract and trained up at a team, those count as pure profit.

The idea behind PSR? Seems to be two slightly different reasons:

(1) The FA does not want any more teams to go bankrupt, and a bankrupt team could be closed down permanently. That's a disaster for teams in small towns. The beginning of "Welcome to Wrexham" explains how the Wrexham team got demoted, how the owner walked away, and how fans kept the team going with, I think, many semi-professional players. A catastrophe for the town.

(2) It looks like a way to reduce the power of outside money, such as those oil-sheiks who can buy a team and pour oil-dollars into buying players. PSR seems written to force a team to "live on its own", in the same way that the Lerners have operated the Nats separately from their real estate business. It gets more complicated in England because teams own their stadiums, and have no power to force a city to build a new stadium. When Tottenham decided to build a mega-stadium to replace the ancient and tiny White Hart Lane, the team had to borrow money and build it themselves. It is built. Looks amazing. And it was designed to host NFL games and concerts, adding to Spurs profitability.

South Korea v Malaysia, in the Asian Cup, is entertaining stuff - highlights on You Tube. (tried to post a direct link, but it's blocked unless watched on YT...).

Maidstone all the way.  Wrexham plays Monday.  That would be an awesome final.

Sat through the snoozefest known as Spurs v Man City. Spurs unlucky to lose - in the sense that the game had 0 -0 written all over it from the first few minutes. City completely dominant, but only four shots on goal for the entire game!...zzzzzzzzzzz

Wrexham started well. Scored first. Then, near the end of the first half, it all started to crash.

Rovers had a lengthy stretch in the premier league not so long ago.  Ryan Nelsen (Kiwi national team) left DC United to play for them while they were still up there.

Big win for Arsenal over Liverpool to leapfrog then into first.  ManCity plays tomorrow and can close the gap. Aston Villa and Tottenham lurking.  Good race for the top this season.

Edit. Never mind. Arsenal is still points back. They had already updated the standings I was looking at.

I love that Luton, Burnley, Everton, and Forest all got a point this weekend.  Bottom of the table is just as interesting as the top

Well Crystal Palace did not get a point and they are headed to the bottom.  Been a bad few months for Eagles.  They would sack the coach but no one wants the job.

At least they haven't gone down the pipes like QPR have done.  Even after two wins in their last three they would still drop if the season ended today.

I flew on an Air Asia aircraft with QPR livery back when they were still in the premier league.  I'll bet that plane has some new paint by now.

Game of the day on Saturday: Spurs against Brighton, 9:50 am EST, Peacock. Spurs have nearly their entire team back, with Son's Korea team having lost in the Asia cup. Maddison stronger, Van De Ven, who might be a great WR in the NFL. Fastest player on the "pitch" nearly every game. Timed reaching 23.33 mph in-game. That is a shade slower than Tyreek Hill, and VdV is 6 foot 4.

And Richarlison is pretty much scoring at will.

Terrific game, as Brighton went ahead early on a penaltty. Spurs opened up in the second half, tyiong the score, then won it in the kast minute of extra time on a Maddison to Richarlison to Son to Johnson goal.
