You think more black people are going to come out to watch Marcus Stroman pitch?  Come on, Man.
My entire family would be inclined to. We tried to catch most of Joe Ross’ starts before the TJ. Do you know how rare an African American starting pitcher is these days?

That's a tad bit racist no? Why not go out of your way to cheer for a white or hispanic pitcher?  I don't take my whole family to watch when a white pitcher is throwing. Cheer for the team no matter what color the pitcher is.

The question was would anyone go out and watch Stroman were he here, and the answer was, "yes, my family would."  It's more analogous to Mexican-Americans who followed Fernando, Japanese Yankee fans who followed Matsui, Jews who track whether a ballplayer is Jewish, etc...  I'm sure Yan Gomes has a following among Brazilian-Americans, and Jose Fernandez drew some of his following not only because he was the best pitcher of his generation.  It's more of "hey, somebody like  me can make it" than any dislike for others simply because they are different.

Thanks for proving my point.

Plus - I like Stromans attitude and really enjoyed him during the last WBC.

I imagine that’s because on any random night, that’s like 80 percent likely to be the case. The pitcher is the most prominent position on the field, I don’t see a problem with wanting your kids to see someone that looks like them on the mound.

And back in the 80s I remember seeing lots of Larry Bird Jerseys on non Celtics fans. Bird was great, but I dont think it was his PPG average solely driving the sales. It’s the same thing. I don’t have a problem with it either way.

Well put, JCA, I swear some people look for reasons to be offended.

I take it that the exchange was in good faith and not really meant to be an accusation.

I'm not offended in the least bit but I guarantee if a white man said he would take his family to a game solely to watch Scherzer because he is white there would be an outcry.

Stroman is a cancer. A locker room crybaby. I wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole.

I used to rock a Michael Jordan jersey and I'm a Spurs fan.

Guaranteed the guys wore the Bird jersey because he was a fantastic ball player. Not because he was white.

Really? I'm quite confident there's a segment of his fanbase, and not a small one, that was a fan of his because he was white. Wasn't he called the "Great White Hope"?

I’m sure there were tons. But if you can have a great player you can identify with more, I’m not faulting anyone for gravitating towards that.

Would love to see the Dodgers acquire Castellanos from the Tigers in lieu of Bryce.

In fairness to Bird, he got a lot of grief from some in the league about "your only a star b/c you are white" at times.  Maybe just trash talking.

Stroman was a stud for team USA and earlier for the BJs, but has come off of 2 down years.  He's a gamble but I trust Rizzo if he says he's worth a shot.

In the league and who his fans were are two different things.

Also, is there talk of going to get Stroman? Or is that just speculative. I've been a bit out of the loop the past couple days with the holiday.

Stroman is on the block per many writers, and the Nats are supposed to be looking for more pitching, but the two have not been connected except by folks here.

If the Nats got Stroman, they would have the most yoked Dad in MLB.

Yikes!

I was confused as well.    Dad must work out 10 hours a day.
