This begs the question...had the Lerner's picked Mike Trout instead of "He Who Shall Not Be Mentioned", would they have let him walk when it came time for big money?
Good question, because the Angels backed up the Brinks truck for Trout.  But so far a significant fraction of that enormous contract has been flushed down the toilet due to injury and lack of support (i.e. NO pitching).  I'm starting to lose my appetite for these types of contracts (e.g. Stras).  It makes the team less agile.

I have said it before, but my impression of the Angels organization is that it is more concerned with the business of baseball than the game. Putting a winning product on the field is nice, but putting a dynamic product that can generate fan interest, sales and media contracts is more important.

You don’t trade Barry Bonds with multiple years of team control.

I’m not going to decipher the translated social media of a 22 year who’s lived in a fishbowl past four years.

heard a story that he may be less inclined to stay here than Turner was and that Turner tried talking Rizzo out of trading him.  I honestly don't know how good the source was about this.

You know what would have convinced him not to trade Turner? Signing an extension.

He is a Boras client and will go to the highest bidder or sign an extension as long as it's over market value. Didn't Harper basically end up signing for close to what he rejected from the Nats?

Well other than none of the money was deferred.

But they handbrake offered him once since the spring of 2020. And his play had clearly elevated since then.  I don’t blame either side. He was just priced out of DC.

Don’t they pay interest on that money? I don’t get the knock on deferred money so much. On one hand, the Lerner’s are super cheap. On the other hand, every July we get a story about how Bobby Bonilla fleeced the Mets by getting deferred money.

I don't get these players not taking deferred money. We aren't talking about mere mortal money, and it's not like these guys are getting 70k a year and deferring millions. You are basically taking a retirement plan with you, and I just don't understand how you "can't" live on 20M a year versus 30M. I guess if you are investing that additional 10M in something else, down the line you could set yourself up for a bigger payday, but you could also end up with less. I'm not a gambler, and I always take the sure thing.

Deferred money is usually a bad deal for the player. Thats money they cant invest right now. Thats why the Nats overpay.

That ten million that gets deferred will be, conservatively, 12+ million in four years.

That's if all players invest. Also, the market is volatile. Deferred money is a guaranteed retirement plan.

Their agents explain this to them. MLB already has a retirement plan. The market is not volatile over the long term.

Again, deferred money is a bad deal for the players, hence the overpay.

Well, I wish somebody offered me deferred money.

Have they published the interest rates the players are getting? Because this assessment is useless unless we know that…

My government pension.

Private sector telecommunications. High pay, NO pension. Roth 401k FTW.

Social security

Bahahahahaha! Yea, I don't believe I'm seeing a cent of that money for a second. I wouldn't be surprised if they raise the minimum age to 72 before I retire, which may never happen and my wife and I actually do save money.

Three years remaining with the Nats.  It it were the Tampa Bay Rays, he would be traded by Opening Day 2022 if he cannot be re-signed this off season.

he's going to spend the rest of this year, and probably all of next year, getting the Barry Bonds treatment. Baseball isn't going to be fun for him.

Just looked it up, since 8/1:

8 BBs, 3 IBBs, in 29 PAs.

I actually wanted to keep Josh Harrison to keep another competent hitter behind Soto.

Well, if he's getting walked so much, hit him 2nd in front of Bell and Yadi.  That's as close to protection as you can get in this lineup.
