I actually think there's an interesting idea to have Ruiz, Adams and like a Millas (in theory) on the roster. Rotate DH between Ruiz and Adams and use a Millas a third catcher. Adams probably would need to learn 1B well enough to sit out there once every two weeks.

There's no need to have a DH-only guy on the roster like Meneses.

I dont think Adams .391 BABIP is sustainable. Like maybe as a platoon at first, but not much beyond that.

Ruiz needs to spend the offseason doing conditioning and catcher drills.

Millas is showing a lot at AAA. He's been dynamite offensively since the last week or so of June. He was supposed to be a good defensive guy, so I'd like to know how he's doing in terms of caught stealing and the like. He may be the guy who gets half the starts while Adams and Keibert rotate between 1st, C,  and elsewhere.

This x1000. We need a big offseason from Ruiz with a significant focus on defensive improvement.

With that said, the hitting is back to form 💯

That’ll do

Further detail on his last 25 games:
88 AB
30 H
6 2B
4 HR
12 RBI
11 BB
11 SO
.341/.410/.546

Bat definitely plays.

Interesting point from Ben Clemens today made in the context of discussing Bellinger but potential helpful in explaining Ruiz's xwOBA > wOBA by a lot:

Quote
Bellinger: I’m told I’m more sustainable than my xWOBA looks because I pull a lot of balls. Why does that matter?
2:30
Ben Clemens: so, xwOBA completely ignores the spray; it just groups by exit velo and angle
2:30
Ben Clemens: but that’s kinda weird for a few reasons: the most obvious is that the walls are closer down the corners
2:31
Ben Clemens: also, though, batted balls outperform their xwOBA when pulled and underperform it going opposite. I think it has to do with the spin imparted, on average, when you’re out in front to pull the ball
2:31
Ben Clemens: there are a lot of those crushed slices that seem to flee the right fielder
https://blogs.fangraphs.com/ben-clemens-fangraphs-chat-8-14-23/

Ruiz for much of the year had a lot of problems pulling the ball in the air. Most of his flies were oppo.

If only we had a hitting coach that specialized in helping hitters get the ball in the air a little bit more . . .

So is Ruiz figuring it out now by ignoring the hitting coach? Or is he finally listening to him?

Sometimes I go on the Phillies fan forums. Many Philly fans are not happy with Kevin Long.

Many Philly fans are wrong. Bohm has improved since Long started, and Brandon Marsh dramatically got better since coming over from the Angels. Long has always been a highly respected hitting coach, and only in places like New York or Philly where fans whine about damn near everything would they be unhappy with Kevin Long. St. Louis strikes me as another fandom that would whine about Kevin Long.

I will say it has gotten better, mostly. I'll still hear that one or two games a season the "Philthy Phaithful" shows up and acts like trash. I'm not saying the booing of players and stuff, I'm saying the nasty, disgusting, vomiting on little kids kind of stuff that used to happen has thankfully become much less prevalent.

So what have they done recently that fits that category?

I think most of the lowlifes are now priced out of the events and buying beers at the stadium.

I went to my only Eagles game at the Linc about 12 years ago. The Snow bowl. There was one guy passed out in front of us basically the entire game. They put a blanket over him. Another guy I saw was basically passed out on his feet in the rest room. My son and I survived without any issues but have no desire to attend a game there again. Just too many totally inebriated people.  Just a recipe for fights.  In fact I don’t have much desire to go to an NFL game anywhere. The only game I have been at Fed Ex there were lots of drunken young men roaming around looking for trouble.

Years ago my brother went to an Eagles game in Philly and the guy who wore the full regalia Indian outfit asked him to escort him to the men’s room because he was attacked in a previous game.

I went to a Sixers/Celtics game at the Spectrum. I saw a guy in a Celtics jersey get pummeled by everybody including the Salvation Army volunteer.

Wore a Redskins coat to their stadium, though it was Virginia Tech against Temple. Got some comments on the concourse, but that was it. It wasn’t a matter of let’s see what I can start up; that was the coat I wanted, and accounted for potential back-and-forth.

Having been to Yankees-Red Sox games in person in both venues, there could be less back-and-forth that some might think after people have spent a hefty chunk of change for the game. That again, stupid stuff can erupt at the drop of a hat.

The way things are going, anytime you go to one of these events, people would do well to factor in the clown factor in how much of that do you want to entertain, having presumably paid a decent chunk of money for what purports to be an exercise in entertainment. Public safety outside of the stadium seems to be vying for its place in the clown show nowadays.

Agree.

Temple is my alma mater and VT is my son’s.  A shame they don’t play anymore.

I’ve thought about going to the VT at Florida State game this year but doubt the missus will want to go. Son is coming for a visit but unfortunately a few weeks after that game.
