o
We can thank Yuniesky Betancourt  for Strasburg. The Mariners had lost 101 ball games to the Nationals 100. Then Betancourt went off. 5-for-7 with a walk, two runs and two RBI to lead the Mariners to 7-3 and 4-3 wins over Oakland. The Nationals clinched the Strasburg sweepstakes by losing two games to Philadelphia.

That is brilliant. I assume Betancourt is roundly hated by the Mariner's faithful?!

Just looking at that draft class though... Dustin Ackley, who I have never heard of was who the Mariners went for at 2... let's not get into Trout falling to 25. Stoopid scouts.

I think Trout only fell because no one thought they'd be able to sign him.

Based on what I've read, I think this may be a mindfact.  Can't find anything about signability concerns.

He was buried in New Jersey. No first round pick out of New Jersey had ever turned into much. I think there was just too much uncertainty. Billy Beane almost took him the pick before the Angels.

Just goes to show how absolutely stupid geographical bias is.

also, I think I heard he did not have some great showcase games the summer before his senior year.

Could be. But the scout in the video, the game he was at, Trout k'd 3 times and got a single, but it was enough to convince the guy they would take him if he was available.

He popped up 3 times I think which makes a bit of difference from a scouting perspective.

Was it? Ok. I don't think a scout is going to take too much stock in any single game, though. He'd built up enough of a resume by that point I don't think what he did that day really had any bearing.
