Virginia made the tournament.

Virginia made the play in. If they don’t play on Thursday or Friday, they aren’t in the tournament

Well they are not out of it either.  Which is what he said.

Edit:  The first four is the official title of the games they are in.  The play-in is not the official title.  The field is 68 teams.

Interesting stat I saw:

NC State at Verizon Center last week: 5 games, 5 wins.
Washington Bullets at Verizon Center this season: 31 games (so far), 4 wins.
Georgetown Hoyas at Verizon Center in Big East play the past three seasons: 53 games, 2 wins (they did win various non-conference games).

Regarding UVA, while obviously I'm biased, I took some satisfaction in their making it just because of how ESPN reports Lunardi's projections as settled fact well before the brackets are announced.

We won’t know if UVA makes it until tomorrow

You can say whatever you want. Doesn't make you correct.

You can pretend a team that loses on Tuesday makes a tournament that starts on Thursday, that doesn't make it so

What makes you think you make the rules?

The first round starts on March 21. If you want to call playing a game to make the first round, making it, good for you

Let me know what you use to wash your head off when you pull it out of your rear end. Might be good information to have.

Teams playing in the "First Four" get paid for making the NCAA Tournament. That's what's relevant, not your opinion.

According to the NCAA they are all in the tournament.  68 in the field.  People like
To go by their brackets and what the media says.

Congrats on UVA making it.  I’m hoping VPI can make some noise in the NIT but doubtful.  On the women’s side they would have a good chance of making the Final Four if their best player was not hurt.  Losing the three time ACC player of the year hurts.

so the only Virginia teams in the tournament are Longwood, UVA, and JMU, with UVA in the first four game?

I believe those are the only Maryland, DC or Virginia teams.

No Philly teams.  Second year in a row. Villanova was carrying the water.  I was looking at the 1971 bracket and the Big Five had three teams in a 25 team tourney.  Actually three of the seven teams in the East region.

Howard is in a play-in game.

So the First Four is not part of the tournament?  Why does the NCAA say a 68 team field?  So when the First Four was called the first round they were in the field but not now that they call it something different?

When one round is called the first round then anything before is a qualifier.

It was called that until you and others told them that was too confusing.

In fairness, I think "First Four" is a stupid name. It's obviously intended to be a cutesy play on "Final Four," but the latter name refers to the fact that four teams make it to that stage of the tournament. The "Four" in "First Four" refers to the number of games played in that round—four games, which by definition means eight teams. I guess they weren't able to think of some sort of alliterative or rhyming nickname that went with "eight."

It’s also confusing because it includes the four lowest seeds.  But also another four ten or eleven seeds.  Who are clearly better qualified than some of the teams that wait until Thursday or Friday.

The tournament starts tomorrow.

https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2024-03-17/2024-march-madness-mens-ncaa-tournament-schedule-dates?amp

I know that is true because it’s on my betting site.  Vegas don’t lie.

HalfSmokes is obviously confused anyway because the first round starts on Thursday, March 21, not on March 22. Unless now HalfSmokes is going to claim that the 32 teams that play Thursday aren't in the tournament either.

He’s confused and that is why he is a DC sports fan.
