Max done for the year.

ESPN:

Quote
Breaking: Rangers ace Max Scherzer is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season with a strained teres major -- a muscle that connects the scapula to the humerus.

Scherzer is "unlikely" to pitch in the playoffs, according to Rangers GM Chris Young.

Tough news for Max.  No one wins the battle with Father Time.

Rendon says he has a fractured tibia and doesn’t know why the angels won’t publicly disclose it.

Reading the ESPN article, it sounds like he went to 4 different doctors and all 4 called it a bone bruise.  He found a fifth doctor who called it a fracture.

I've been through similar injuries with my son a couple times.   There will be some kind of dark spot on the x-ray, and the dr will get the opinions of a few different x ray techs.   Some will see some kind of fracture like a stress fracture, others will say bone bruise.   No real way to know conclusively and treatment is about the same.   I just read this too:

Quote
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has summed up these injuries as pretty much one and the same by stating that “a stress fracture is a small crack in a bone, or severe bruising within a bone.” Note the “severe bruising” in the description. The Academy goes on to say that in the case of running, these injuries are usually caused by an increase in activity, such as increasing distances too quickly.

Sounds like Rendon wants everyone to visualize his bone is broken in two and the team wants to keep trotting him out there.    He's kind of being a whiny brat about lots of things these days.    Although it sure sounds like his relationship to the team is broken.    The team itself is a mess with Ohtani's locker being suddenly cleared out, talking about trading Trout and this Rendon stuff.

They have a similiar situation as us with an owner who tried to sell, but couldn't, and a 250+/year tv contract that is in limbo with a bankruptcy company.

They blew a golden opportunity to do what the Nats did last year and restock their farm system. They should have traded Trout and Ohtani this season.  Now, they will get essentially nothing for Ohtani. Maybe they trade Trout in the offseason and try and do something to turn things around. I'd also eat the Rendon contract and trade him as well.

Right now they have no hope. A bunch of old guys with huge contracts and the 28th ranked farm system.

you sort of wonder with Rendon whether he'd have a miraculous burst of recovery were he traded. Would he care enough to want to say "f'them" and play like the guy who apparently had some chronic issues earlier in his career. I don't think so. I think perhaps he was young enough to deal with his pain without doing much rehab, and just doesn't do it now for worse results. Maybe he could DH once Ohtani is gone next year?

Let the Angels pay off Rendon's entire contract, and then trade him to the Nats for Yasel Antuna. Then the Nats can pay him a million a year until House makes the majors or until Jake Alou wins 3B.

I did not realize that, before he became the Nats manager in 2011, Davey Johnson had managed Jacob deGrom at Stetson. deGrom really wanted to be a shortstop and almost quit because he wasn't getting enough at bats. Johnson convinced him to stick to regularly pitch while playing 2 ways.

Tyler Clippard will be at Tom's at the Navy Yard this saturday doing a meet and greet at noon. Of course that's likely to be rescheduled.

Rendon out for the remainder of the season. Only played 200 games since signing with the Angels.

Clippard has officially retired.  It would be nice to get a day to honor him next year.

Angel Hernandez’s awful call on Harper leads to a fan getting a souvenir. MLB needs to get rid of him. Unfortunately Harper will probably get fined / suspended

Well they better not suspend Harper. He did not make any contact with Hernandez.

My understanding in that the umpire union is the group that has prevented him from being fired. Of course he sued MLB for being kept out of the post season but of course the courts threw that out quickly.

I actually feel bad for the other umps they assign to work with him each year.  They know he is terrible but need to keep working with the guy.

I assume Harper will face action for tossing his helmet into the crowd.

When a call is that bad, I think it would send a message to Hernandez and to other umps for the penalty for Harper to be some sort of token thing, like requiring him to buy batting helmets for a little league, or at most 1 day to be served in the regular season.

Absolutely nothing opens up, the bat head is back all the times, I've seen hips and arms twitch more during the national anthem.

End of the road for Tyler Clippard. A pretty damn excellent career.

he and Storen probably are toasting his career with a bottle of the Field of Dreams Bourbon they distill.

Heck of a nice run for the guy who could quite make it as a starter. Converting him was one of the best moves the early teens development staff did. One great pitch and one usable pitch. Sort of what you would have hoped Wander Suero could have become.
