I would agree, that so far the Robles batting 9th and Turner 2nd is working nicely.  I would have preferred Adams get a start today, but we got a W.  Thankful we didn't get swept.

It was pretty late in the fall (late October/early November).    Could have been one his Yankee teams that got bounced early.   I damn near spoke to him.    I've spoken to "stars" at places around town/airports and they're pretty cool.    I don't ask for autographs or get in their space.    Something like a name and a nod or "I like your work."

I do too, but it has nothing to do with so-called "two leadoffs" and I doubt that Martinez even knows why it works.   It's because batting in front of a legitimate batter gives him some degree of protection.  Batting before the pitcher, he's not going to see many pitches worth swinging at.

1. Lineup protection has been shown to be a myth
2. Hes been a part of two clubs before that have hit the pitcher 8th, so I'm guessing he has an idea.
3. That's not the reason hes hitting after the pitcher

I saw the interview live and it definitely wasn't easy, but a listener could figure out what he was trying to say.  He just didn't say what he meant to say.  He stammered a bunched together some words that sorta sounded like what he wanted to say.  I figured it out, but I needed my son to bring me a cold compress to place on my head when it was over.

That's pretty good considering he's only managed 165 games, I bet no other managers as new as Martinez are ranked any higher.

There's plenty of things to point out about Martinez that are bad managing without questioning using Max Scherzer on normal rest vs. the freaking Phillies.

Except he said he was going to give extra rest to them early on. Having Sanchez and Hellickson with the extra days is a perfect opportunity to do that. They could have pitched Sanchez tomorrow, Hellickson on Thursday, and Strasburg on Friday, giving them both an extra day.

We play the Pirates, Giants, Marlins, Rockies and Padres after the Phillies & Mets. With three off-days in there (not to mention an off-day between this series and the Mets). So there's ample opportunity to rest Max and Strasburg against non-divisional opponents (and even possible "weak" opponents in Miami, SF & PIT) rather than throwing out our #4 and #5 starter against the Phillies in the 2nd series of the season.

"Giving them extra rest early on" doesn't have to mean the first week of the season, especially when the season is 6 months long. Mapping it out, we can push Max to the Saturday of the Pirates series instead of Friday (and move Strasburg to Sunday) and then the next week manipulate the Marlins/Rockies series.

All they did was swap Scherzer and Sanchez. A marketing decision. One I'm glad they made.
