frankly, we don't need him to be Soto when he walks in to be an upgrade over what is on the roster. HE just needs to be average to be a couple of fWAR improvement.
I mean, I'm not expecting a superstar. But his margin is particularly thin. There is simply no precedent for someone having his struggles in Double A being a successful major leaguer. And without a commitment from ownership to spend like an actual top 10 market, we can not afford for Wood to spend 3-5 years at the MLB level, trying to "figure it out." Keeping him down a month or two more doesn't impede his development. Calling him up to early likely will.

The Clubhouse / Re: CJ Abrams: Our new man in the middle

Is it possible he is unhappy with the decision to bat second? I wouldn't think that would be a big deal but something seems to be going on with him.
Maybe. Maybe its just not getting as many meatball fastballs

The Clubhouse / Nats most glaring weakness: the closer entrance
« Last post by Count Walewski on Today at 05:10:09 PM »
Kyle Finnegan leads the NL in saves. Yet when he enters the game, you could easily mistake it for a middle reliever entering a blowout for mop-up duty.

At other parks, when the closer enters, the entire stadium goes dark, intense music plays, a video montage of the closer striking out many men plays on the big screen, an intimidating hash is displayed on the ribbon monitors, etc. It can be one of the most thrilling and iconic moments in live sports.

I can't remember the Nationals ever doing something like this for a closer. The closest thing was for Todd Coffey. I used to think we just had a string of understated, humble players in the closer role but now I wonder if the organization just has a philosophical opposition to the over-the-top closer entrance. Maybe they've read the sabremetrics about closing not actually being that hard.

Is this something the team should invest in as it returns to contention?

yeah, i get that Rosario is starting to hit a bit, but i can't believe that Wood wouldn't be an upgrade.

When the Skydome (ahem) first opened in the 80s there were a couple of incidents where the focal point of the crowd's attention left the field for a while.
Someone no doubt said “get a room”.

nothing in his play in the minors resembles Gallo. He's not piling up the Ks, he's not hitting HRs, he has been making decent contact and hitting for some average this year and last, and his walks are not driving his OBP.
probably worth remembering that he's had about 260 ABs in the minors. He's nowhere close to a finished product.

Why would the Marlins want Gallo?
Strictly to flip him at the deadline. Same reasons the Nats wanted him. They have a chance to play him, so if they think he could be moved at the deadline, and they were only playing MLB minimum the rest of the season, why not roll the dice and see if he's an asset? They may prefer Nunez back, but they may want to see if they can turn Gallo into something better.
