The do anything approach is fine, too. I was aiming at a 5K in March, now I'm thinking 10K instead. I can run five miles with relative ease now. I didn't do the Couch to 5K religiously, I just counted and increased the running to waking ratio bit by bit as I felt like it.
i got 3 days in this week - half a mile on monday, a mile on wednesday, and a mile and a quarter today. Running/walking still and trying to focus more on getting a good 25-30 minute workout in rather than how far i actually run.
