The Nationals have balked at trading pitchers Ross Detwiler or Brad Peacock for Upton, reports ESPN's Jayson Stark.  One executive says the Giants have moved in.

Detwiler.

This. WTF?

Also, I call BS on the protection theory for Werth. Even protection-believers (I myself think it has a very small effect) would not say that it causes you to drop 200 points in OPS or whatever he's done.

Raked? You have to look where a guy played. He was protected in that lineup last year. He had 147 KOs last year and the Phillies were looking to get rid of him before he got hot.

He had a good year, but not $120+ Million kind of good year.

And I'd take Giambi - as i'm assuming the lol @ Matt Stairs has to do with what he has done with the Nats.
Okay, first off, everyone has said that he was not worth the contract. Everyone knew that. The Nationals over-paid to get him to come to a losing team.

Second, only last year did he bat substantially better at home. In 2009 and 2008 he put up similar numbers whether home or away.

Third, KO? This isn't boxing ....

What if three other teams offer better deals and the Nats would have had to trade Lombo and Peacock?

imo i think CF is a huge need.  so i'm okay with giving up some top prospects/some mlb players.

God I hope it's the latter of the two.

Detwiler's just not very good. If Tampa is willing to take him as part of a package for Upton it would be asinine to say no.

and MLBTR came out and said the Cards were asking for a ton about Rasmus, not Rays regarding Upton.

I was right 8)

I'd ship Detwiler out for DJ Kitty at this point.

Detwiler is a nice arm in the bullpen who can spot start if needed. We shouldn't let that stop us from acquiring Upton or Span

I would do Lombo/Peacock/+ for Span, but it isn't a deal that can't be outbid by a more desperate contender with a better farm system. BJ will go to whoever doesn't get Beltran, and it is more likely Rasmus ends up with the Braves or Indians.

Detwiller for Upton is a no-brainer for us.  I call BS on this (unless it's Detwiller AND Peacock).

Detwiler.

I agree, with the caveat that it depends on what else they're asking for.

I think that Rizzo is holding out for Span or Rasmus. You have to think that Upton would be his third choice (maybe even fourth after Bourn) at this point, most likely because of control time. Until you're %100 sure that you can't get either Span or Rasmus, you don't give your final offer for Upton. They've probably offered Desmond for Upton and if they lose out on the other two, then they'll probably throw in a minor league arm like Milone, Meyers or Detwiler. Desmond and Peacock for Upton would be overpaying IMO.

There's still several days left. Balking at trading Detwiler in a package is posturing, I would hope.

I definitely could be wrong, but it seems that they are balking at adding Detwiler or Peacock to whatever package they are building at the moment.  Detwiler is a LH bullpen arm that the Nats still believe could be a part of the rotation (wishful thinking on their part IMO).  Personally, I've been watching Det since his days with P-Nats and outside of a few flashes, he has never shown the ability to be a regular starting pitcher in the league.  I do however think he would make a good reliever and possibly a decent set up man down the road.  With that said and like others have mentioned, a Detwiler for Upton deal would be a no-brainer.

I agree. I haven't liked Upton from the get go.

Span for Desmond, relief pitcher (Coffey, Mattheus, Detwiler) and prospect (Milone/Jordan)

Rasmus for ... well, just about anyone in the farm not named Harper

I was laughing at the fact that the Nats thought Detwiler was still worth something.

He's a lefty and he can pitch. And he's actually done okay in limited innings this year.

linty would you do desmond and detwiler (and maybe a B/C low prospect) for upton?
