Alejandro Machado

The Washington Nationals signed a 24-year old free agent middle infielder to a minor league contract.  The Caracas native was originally signed by the Braves at the age of sixteen as a nondrafted free agent in 1998.

The switch hitting prospect was in big demand as he was traded from the Braves to the Royals to the Brewers to the Expos.  He has hit .300 or better four times in his career.  The Nationals traded Machado to the BoSox  on February 15, 2005.  He hit .300 in 117 games for Pawtucket with 17 doubles, two triples, 3 home runs and 43 RBIs in 2005.  He was called up to Boston, where he fielded flawlessly in ten games, playing second base, shortstop, and all three outfield positions.

The 6-0, 160 pounder hit .260 with 12 doubles, four triples, and four home runs in 116 games.

Rebuilding a farm system is a very slow process.  And signings like this are beneficial.  I'm sure no one was blown away, like most likely, no one reacted by saying "Oh my god, we freakin got Alejandro Machado!"  But hopefully in the future, we will be able to say, "Man, we're so lucky we have Alejandro Machado."  It's very unlikely that prospects pan out, but if you've got enough of them to populate a good farm system, you're sure to have a couple good ones in the mix.

He could well make our roster as a utility infielder.  A guy who can hit .300 and field multiple positions, has a place on our our 25 man roster.
