I think Clippard began his big-league career as a starter (albeit not a particularly good one), so it's not a huge stretch.

Hell, I had forgotten he started a couple games for the '08 Nats.  Looks like I've done a pretty good job of mostly erasing that team from my memory.

nah they're stealing a page from the Sox circa 2006-don't you remember how they let Julian Tavarez start a few games at teh end of the season because they were so desperate? He did a decent job they let him be a starter the following year for a couple months.  Hope Clip does well, it's a huge deal for a reliever to get a start.
who is this Julian Tavarez you speak of?

Lucas Giolito's ERA this year is 6.26
Reynoldo Lopez is at 4.57
Dane Dunning is pitching well in Double A.

Werth appeared at the Phillies game today; part of their reunion weekend.

Nice article from a few days ago.

I watched JZimm and Edwin Jackson start in Oakland last night.  Zimmermann looked like he might, just might, be finding something, but he doesn't have any stamina anymore.  Without that contract, he'd be pitching in someone's bullpen and maybe doing well at it.

Jackson looked good.  If he was throwing the ball anything like that earlier this year (when in the Nats system), she should have been in the MLB rotation regardless of his issues last year.   Good stuff, lots of guys off stride, lots of grounders and popups, 1 unearned run in 6.1, and I thought he was good to finish out the 7th.

I saw that the Red Sox called up Tony Renda when they put Ian Kinsler on the DL.

A’s acquire Shawn Kelley and cash for international slot money from Nationals.

Shawn Kelley making his debut tonight for the A's against the Dodgers, coming in with one out and runners on 1st and 2nd.  He walked Brian Dozier on four pitches that were over the LH batter's box, got Manny Machado to pop out, and got Justin Turner to line out after throwing the first two pitches far off the zone.

McKenzie Mills, sent to Philly by the Nats for Howie Kendrick, goes to Miami in the Bour trade.  We drafted him in the 18th round in 2014.

Zuck:

Quote
Kintzler has now made five appearances in 10 days for the Cubs, the first four of which came in his first six days with his new team. He has yet to allow a run to score, retiring 10 of 15 batters faced. The Cubs have won all five games in which he has pitched.

That's even with his 2 walk, no out performance yesterday.

Did McKenzie ever make it as far as Potomac?

no, he was at Hagerstown when we traded him, but he made it to high-A in the Phillies system.

Giolito got crushed by the Yanks the other day.  5 IP, 7 ER. What were scouts seeing? his fastball tops out at like 94 and is straight as hell. Wasn't that rated as an 80 grade pitch?

After a year in the minors, followed by a stint in the independent league, Ross Detwiler is back in the majors in a relief role with Seattle.

He was only up because Leake got scratched 2 hours before the game, so they need a way to get him back to AAA and he can't be optioned.  Hence the DFA.  He actually didn't do a bad job - 3 ER in 6 innings - but that makes him useless for the next few days anyway, and Leake will be ready for his next start.

I'm guessing there won't be a rush to claim him.

One would think not.  But just watch Rizzo go for it, just to make everyone's heads explode.

Murphy starts at 2B, batted leadoff and had a hit.  Madden sprinkled pixie dust on him to play second.
