Did he freak up anything major?  Because I'm seeing a bunch of really minor issues here that still didn't seem to stop the team from winning 98 games last year.

drafting storen with trout on the board?

No scout thought Trout would turn into what he is now.  He was a high upside guy, but didn't project to be a batting champion and the next potential Ricky Henderson.

Storen has been very good for us.  Also, Stras was taken in the same draft and just think that the Mariners could have had Trout at 2 and took Dustin Ackley, *rimshot*.

that's fine, but every team that passed on him objectively made a mistake (with the possible exception of the nats at the first pick with Stras.)

if Trout was picked 11th, right after Storen, that would be more valid. But Trout went 25th, after Storen, 14 players were picked ahead of Trout.

so you're saying that just because other teams made a mistake means that we didn't? The nice thing about sports, especially in drafts when you do have a break out player is you can objectively say one choice was better than another. Just because all the research leads you to one choice doesn't mean it's the correct one

So if all those GM's made such big mistakes, should they all be fired?

Send Morse to Seattle for Lucas Luetge.
The Mariners grabbed Luetge off the Brewers in last year's Rule 5 Draft...

bit of a logical leap? What GM gets fired for missing on one pick in a draft? If a GM consistently passes on superior players, they should be fired, but mistakes get made

We made a mistake, and 23 other teams made a mistake. But the mistake (IMHO) is mitigated when others make the same mistake. Trout was picked 25th, therefore the consensus was that Trout was the 25th best player in that draft. Look, hindsight is 20/20, if you want, you can go back and redo every draft just taking the player who turned out the best a few years later. But the draft plays out because that's the way that MLB teams evaluated that group of players.

If we had passed on Strasburg, who was a consensus #1, that would have been a huge, measurable mistake.

Sorry, it was a bit of a leap.  For some reason I thought you were siding with what PC said about Rizzo deserving to be fired and I lumped the two statements together.  My bad.

We got stuck with Brian Broderick for several games because of a blown Rule 5 pick.  Another fireable offense.

do you grade scouts and GMs on whether or not they drafted according to the consensus or whether the players they choose panned out and whether those players turned out to be the best available at the time?

Any chance we can pry McGee away from the Rays by offering Morse or would they want more?

Probably would require more. McGee is still pre-arb, so he's of great value to the cash-strapped Rays.
