Ross Detwiler for the Nationals.
Bats right, throws left.
Fastball: Detwiler was throwing his fastball in the 90-94 mph range in his season debut.
FB Movement: His fastball had plus life throughout his start.
Curve: Detwiler was throwing his curve in the 76-78 mph range. It had good rotation and he kept it around the strike zone all night.
Changeup: This is clearly Detwiler's third pitch, but it grades as an average offering.
Control: Detwiler threw strikes consistently, something he's had trouble with in the past.
Poise: Detwiler had tremendous poise and mound presence.
Aggressiveness: He was extremely competitive and went right after hitters.
Physical Description: Tall, skinny lefty with slight build.
Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: Detwiler showed two plus pitches, good mound presence and terrific command on Friday.
Weaknesses: He'll always have to answer questions about the durability of his frame, and his ability to stay consistent with his delivery has been a concern in the past.
Summary: It was quite a debut for Detwiler. His delivery was improved from a year ago. As a result, his direction to the plate was improved and he was able to throw quality strikes all night. If he can keep this up, he'll quickly move to the top of the ever-popular college lefty list.
