Doolittle is one of my favorite players in baseball though. I also liked Madson when he was on the Phillies as well.

Were the Cardinals even sellers today?

To many Cards fans dismay, they didn't sell. I'd still be interested in Rosenthal in the off-season but the Cards probably won't sell.

0.15 ERA and 0.18 WHIP separate Grace and Rosenthal this season. Rosenthal gets more K's but an out's an out. I'm not saying Grace is our new closer. I just don't think Rosenthal is enough of an upgrade over what we already that it would justify spending money or prospects.

Rosenthal previously lost the closer role for a reason.  His ERA was 4.46 with a 1.91 WHIP last year.  Yes, a 1.91 WHIP!  No wonder they yanked him and experimented with him as a starter.  He's at a 3.43 ERA this year, so better.  He's 27 and and was good 2013-2015, so I wouldn't mind having Rosenthal, but he's FAR from the answer as a proven closer.

The Cardinals had a weird deadline. They could've gone either way but chose to do nothing.

The most tricky position is being only a few games out of a wildcard or division but as a .500ish team you don't expect to have a chance if you made the postseason.

He has made a huge tweak in his delievery and is using more offspeed stuff to steal strikes, been super effective last month.

He could be someone who would work out, but I need more evidence that this "tweak" is a permanent solution.  As mentioned above, Danny Espinosa had "tweaks" that led to good months but he always reverted back to bad again.  I'd have more confidence in any of the 3 relievers we got to close than Rosenthal right now.  That might change if Rosenthal has a great August and September.

The Cards asking price for Rosenthal was probably too high.

Nobody got Rosenthal, nobody got Hand. Plenty of teams wanted relievers. The fact that they went to no one means that the prices were likely ridiculous. I don’t put that on Rizzo.

Well, tomwvr basically nailed the first half in March the Predictions Thread. Hopefully the back half doesn't come true.

Quote
Predict a trade:
2 prospects for Brandon Kintzler

Do we trade for an established closer, and if so whom? yes Kintzler - but he fails badly

Kintzler looked really good last night.  I know, only four outs, but his stuff is terrific.

I like him a lot.  I think many are undervaluing this acquisition.

His breaking stuff breaks so late that it's just unfair.

Plus we don't have a lot of other Winnipeg Goldeyes alumni on the team.

Kintzler/Madson/Doolittle is a damn good back half of the pen. Just need 6 quality innings from our starters everytime in October.

Even if it's 5 we can play annoying matchup baseball. Like warm up 2 lefties and 2 righties and get one out per guy.

Dusty seems committed to using Doolittle as the closer.

As long as one of the "big three" closes, I don't really mind too much.
