Nats purchase contract of RHP Travis Hughes
« Topic Start: July 28, 2006, 09:26:45 PM »
The Washington Nationals today purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Travis Hughes from Triple-A New Orleans. Nationals Vice President/General Manager Jim Bowden made the announcement.

Hughes, who will wear No. 37, takes the roster spot of lefthander Mike Stanton, who earlier today was dealt to San Francisco for minor league right-handed pitcher Shairon Martis.

Hughes was 1-5 with four saves and a 2.48 ERA in 46 appearances for New Orleans. He had allowed just one earned run in 16.0 innings in July.

The 28-year-old posted 80 strikeouts in 65.1 Triple-A innings, an average of 11.0 strikeouts per nine innings. The 28-year-old allowed just a pair of home runs, an average of one every 32.2 innings of work. Opponents were hitting just .191 against him at the time of his promotion.

Hughes was claimed off waivers from Texas on April 7, 2005, and appeared in 14 games for the Nationals last year.

Well, someone needed to replace Stanton. I wonder what's the deal with Hinckley? Isn't he supposed to be pretty good?

Our prized Mike Hinckley is going 6.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 3 BB so far tonight, as the P-Nats are up 4-1 in the Top of the 7th. Nice start Mike.

UPDATE: Mike finished on a sour note.  Pitched 6.1, 11 hits, 3 ers.  Still in line to get the win right now.  4-3 in Bot 7th.

Hinckley isn't going to be called up anytime soon. He has a 5-7 record with a 5.42 ERA in 103 innings pitched. From the numbers hammondsnats gave us, he pitched just a spec better than is overall average tonight against Winston-Salem. The Nats former number one prospect career has taken a few steps backwards, and if he doesn't turn things around, he will be completely off the board on the prospect list.
