What are you listening to (2024)?
« Topic Start: January 01, 2024, 08:05:10 PM »
Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding came up randomly on music choice / classic hits. LLB always struck me as weird for an Elton song because it's so guitar-driven.

And it's out: Billy Joel's first new song in 17 years. It's fantastic IMHO.

Jebus...what a boring and otherwise unremarkable score...and while the man never had what one might call a great voice, he's really lost whatever he had.  Sounds like a drunk iron worker doing Karaoke at a Buffalo Wild Wings on a Wednesday night.

The best thing he ever did was Christie Brinkley...so kudus to him for that...

agree to disagree. Having grown up on Long Island, Billy Joel holds a special place to me.

Meh.  I loved Bill back in the day.  His voice is not good as say, Neil Young, but ok for me.  Saw him in concert a couple times in the early 1980s and have the early albums. Turnstiles is my favorite.

Heard Billy talk about the song the other day. He didn’t write it. He was asked by Freddie Wexler, a songwriter friend of his, to come to his studio to look at possibly finishing some unfinished Joel songs. When Joel arrived Wexler played the song for him. Joel fell in love with it, thought the words are what he would have written, and worked with Wexler to finish the song.

So Paramount is taking down the videos of Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman from last night. Here's a snippet from Entertainment Tonight.

I like it. No, it's not his best song ever, and his voice sounds like a great deal of processing has been applied to it, to get it sounding a little more like it did 50 years ago, but it's a real treat to hear something new from him. Hopefully he's working on an album.

He performed it live last night at the end of the Grammy's and sounded fine, especially 74 year old. They brought him back to close out the show with You May Be Right.

Absolutely strange to see Billy close out the show given how removed he has been from the pop music scene for 30 years, and also to see current artists having the time of their life watching him perform.  Almost as odd as having Joni Mitchell perform live as well.

Easily the best performance last night:

kudos to both for harmony on the chorus.

How was Joni?  She’s really old.  And a heavy smoker at least back in the day.

She's 80 and did a duet with Brandi Carlile, backed by a chamber orchestra. She sounded great, especially for her age and that she's still recovering from a brain aneurysm.

here's a video that appears to have been recorded off someone's TV:

Amazing. I never thought we'd get to hear her sing again. She looks and sounds incredible when you consider what she's been through.

Overall it was a really good Grammy show last night IMHO, and the first one I can ever remember watching from start-to-finish. Not overly loaded with hip-hop / pop performances, the ones that they did include, including Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa, and Olivia Rodrigo were all good. My kids tell me Rodrigo is pretty much second only now to Taylor Swift in terms of popularity. Billie Eylish's performance of he song from Barbie was really good. And there were plenty of old guy music moments including a Stevie Wonder live duet with a video of Tony Bennett, a nearly 70 year old Annie Lennox performing Nothing Compares 2 U in honor of Sinead O'Conner. And, even a bit of Jimmy Buffett as well as Mitchell and Billy Joel.

As noted, Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs stole the show.

And every time they cut to Taylor Swift, she was standing, singing, and/or dancing to whoever was performing on stage. Trevor Noah made a comment that they were going to cut to football players all night to balance out the NFL coverage.

She didn't perform on the show. She did announce that somehow she managed to record a new album that will be out in April.
