https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/02/extension-candidate-cj-abrams.html

Quote
Difficult as the start to Abrams’s big league career has been, it’s worth noting that he’s steadily improved as his time in the majors has gone on. Over the youngster’s final 88 games last season, Abrams slashed .265/.325/.442 with 33 extra base hits in 381 trips to the plate. That performance at the plate was good for an above-average wRC+ of 105, which when combined with an astonishing 41 stolen bases in 43 attempts over that time span made Abrams a quality offensive contributor out of the leadoff spot for the Nationals. Abrams’s defense at shortstop enjoyed some level of improvement during the 2023 campaign, as well: the 22-year-old posted a +4 DRS last year, a figure that put him in the same conversation as regulars at the position such as Bo Bichette and Javier Baez in terms of glove work.

What would be CJ's approximate asking price now that Witt Jr. has signed a long term deal with the Royals?

What would be CJ's approximate asking price now that Witt Jr. has signed a long term deal with the Royals?

The article notes:
Quote
Given these factors, it’s fair to assume that any deal between Abrams and the Nationals would would likely guarantee the youngster at least $60MM, giving him the largest guarantee awarded to a shortstop with between one and two years of service time in the majors. Speculatively speaking, an eight-year deal in the $60-65MM range would appear to be reasonable extension for both sides, likely with a club option or two at the end as has become typical of early-career extensions for players who aren’t already established stars. Such a deal could allow the Nationals to extend their window of control over Abrams, who is currently slated to hit free agency following the 2028 season following his age-27 campaign, through his early thirties.

Sign him to one of the famous Lerner extended payment deals and then trade him while is value is still high and his cost is low...

The article notes:

Tbh that seems very unrealistic, Witt Jr has just gotten a $289 mill contract (albeit with better stats than CJ), these figures in this article are way too low for CJ.

Hey, with this current FA market, who knows, this might end up being true one day  :mg:

I think we can all agree Abrams is the one reason to be excited about this upcoming season. He has the highest ceiling on the team. I hope he continues on an upward trajectory along with Gray, Gore, and Ruiz. I think those are the only players that will still be around when we usher in the new era. The rest of this roster is filler.

I am not sure I would sully his upward trajectory with a comp to Gray, Gore, and Ruiz. Whether he's a part of a contender depends on how quickly other chips fall into place (how quickly the window opens). There's still room for improvement, and I'd love to see him focus on OBP first offensively. He gets on, it is a double under the current rules.

No BS on that last point. Starting with 7/1, he had 80 hits, 29 for extra bases. That's 51 singles, and add in 23 walks and six HBP, so that roughly brings you back to 80 times on first. He stole 38 times. Some of those were 3rd base, some of those times on there was probably a runner on second, but still, he turned a time on into a double roughly half the time, and only had 2 CS.

I would kill to get baseball savant to do splits. I would like to know if the uptick in power was the result of Washington being a launching pad once it heats up. Beginning of July or so.

If you find out, let me know. Maybe we should be rooting for more climate change.

Nah it’s why Mo Vaughn and Freddie Lynn sucked for the Angels. Rendon doesn’t hurt my argument either

I think we're past the point of extending him on a team friendly deal. Still should get it done.

I really want to extend CJ ASAP, but I am not sure he has earned an 11-year 288 million extension just yet...

At this point, he's goint to bet on himself to do it. Over his last 82 games. He has 14 homers and 41 stolen bases. Witt got his extension after a 30/50 season. Abrams is right there.

Takes two to make a deal.  Do the Lerners want this? The Keibert extension is not looking as rosy now.

In a promising sign for the rebuild, I'm left wondering this morning if we need a dedicated CJ Abrams thread.

EDIT

I could have just scrolled down the main page

Saw this morning that CJ has a higher OPS than Soto (1.004 to .972).  This is turning into one of the most lopsided trades ever.
