I think sportsfan has become inordinately obsessed with hitters taking pitches for the sake of having good at bats.

Which Bergmann will we see - Jason Ace, or Beach Boy?

Our ABs, believe it or not, worsen with runners on base. It's like we just take a hack at the first pitch even close to a strike rather than working the count and getting a good pitch to hit.

We're going to need the good Bergmann in order to hope for an extra innings tie  :?

We really need to keep Gomez off the bases.

The more pitches you see the better chance you have of getting a hit or drawing a walk.

I'm more concerned with batters swinging at pitches they are comfortable with or pitches they feel they can drive. Sometimes, that pitch comes early in the count.

Boone's defense is going to cost us.

QFT. There are a few situations where you wouldn't want them to swing at the first couple of pitches, but that's usually later in the game.

Well, the vast majority of the time we swing at a pitch early in the count it results in an easy out. It would be something if they were doing something swinging early in the count but they aren't. Who's to say that the first or second pitch will be the most hittable pitch of the entire AB? The more pitches you see the better chance you'll find the pitch you are looking for.

LOL This is more a problem of talent than getting better pitches to hit.

So you'd rather our guys have an 0-2 or 1-2 count than swing at the first or second pitch?

Well, those that have more talent usually work the count and thus get better pitches to hit. See: Joe Mauer.

Both Mauer and Morneau are worlds better than anything we can throw out there.

That's pretty pathetic. Has Mauer down 0-2 and can't put him away.

I liked that pitch, but Mauer has a great eye.

Actually the difference between Mauer and our hitters is that he was able to foul enough of the pitches to stay alive. Our hitters put those pitches in play for easy unproductive outs.

Yeah, we aren't very good at fouling off pitches and extending ABs. Mauer has a really good batting eye too.

1-0. Might as well be 5-0.

Gomez really needs to be kept off the bases for the rest of the game.
