I think sportsfan has become inordinately obsessed with hitters taking pitches for the sake of having good at bats.
The more pitches you see the better chance you have of getting a hit or drawing a walk.
I'm more concerned with batters swinging at pitches they are comfortable with or pitches they feel they can drive. Sometimes, that pitch comes early in the count.
Well, the vast majority of the time we swing at a pitch early in the count it results in an easy out. It would be something if they were doing something swinging early in the count but they aren't. Who's to say that the first or second pitch will be the most hittable pitch of the entire AB? The more pitches you see the better chance you'll find the pitch you are looking for.
****. Boone is terrible. Why won't Manny let Casto play 3B?

LOL This is more a problem of talent than getting better pitches to hit.
Well, those that have more talent usually work the count and thus get better pitches to hit. See: Joe Mauer.
Both Mauer and Morneau are worlds better than anything we can throw out there.
Actually the difference between Mauer and our hitters is that he was able to foul enough of the pitches to stay alive. Our hitters put those pitches in play for easy unproductive outs.
