they're acting more like a lifestyle brand and less like a tech company

That's a really good way of putting it.

If you want a good watch you'll buy one that you can hand down.  If you want a health tracker get a Garmin (not "sexy" but they actually work and don't require being charged multiple times a day).  I don't see the utiility in this other than "hey, the dipcraps are buying Fitbits (aka crapBits) and the Android watch - let's get in on the action."  I'm still trying to understand what they're going to get out of Beats.  I haven't bought music since I got a Spotify pro account years ago and I seriously doubt they'll put something together (streaming wise) that's as good as Spotify or Rdio with Beats.  And now that the big corded headphones are passe are there really that many idiots out there willing to pay over $100 for earbuds?

Beats makes perfect sense with the watch, it can store music and has both no headphone jack and limited ability to pair with devices that apple doesn't approve

Don't you have to have the iPhone to sync with the watch?  Otherwise what good is it?

Macs aren't for productivity, they aren't for Enterprise if you aren't a designer, and Office 2011 is a joke. Thankfully MS is finally coming out with a new Office finally.

2008 was a fine time to buy a Mac. And I don't believe anyone called them under powered, if you need a laptop with 16gb of RAM to do design work, get a MBP.

Hardware is good, Apple store support is good. No argument there. They're just lagging behind at this point and it's getting more obvious every release cycle.

Bought an Apple TV today; seems to work well.  Am able to stream from my computer to the TV also.  Frustrating that some of the channels are unavailable (e.g., CNN, History channel) direct on the Apple since apparently comcast does not partner with them.  Will likely downgrade my cable tv to basic cable next; the bad news is that if I do that I believe that only MASN 2 and not MASN is in the Comcast limited basic package. And of course MLB TV still has the blackout rule although there was some talk of suspending that.

Also trying to decide between hulu and netflix.

Mostly because it will synch with my macbook and iPhone.   Also it has several Korean TV channels (KOR TV) which my wife will watch. Price also just dropped 30 bucks. Most of the reviews seem to recommend Roku.

OK gearheads - I need a tablet, like today. Is the iPad markedly better than a Samsung or whatever other brand? This is primarily for e-mail and basic internet crap.

If you want basic, most things will work (the $49 sorny at cvs won't). Just buy a name you recognize (some off brands come pre loaded with malware) and you should be fine (I'm typing this on a kindle fire that I think is perfectly acceptable)

Everyone I (er, "i") know who has an iPad loves it. I can't recall hearing anything positive or negative about any other brand. I guess my needs are pretty pedestrian, so maybe I'll just go with the Chevrolet here.

An iPad will absolutely meet your needs, but it's also massively overpriced for the hardware and what you're saying you'd use it for.  The big thing you get with the iPad is the Apple Store. It's by far the best apps selection available.  This is really primarily important if you plan on playing games.  If you have zero interest in mobile ports of things from 10+ years ago in the real world and really just want email, browsing and streaming, get something from Samsung.

If you want a bit more function and flexibility, consider something like an Asus Win 8.1 tablet/laptop/convertible/hybrid/thingy.  From what you're describing though... Samsung or a Kindle.  I love my Kindle Fire HDX.  I would love the Apple Store... but that's because I like ports of board games into digital format and that's the primo place.

Just got a new Chevy truck that has apple CarPlay.  This is life changing.  Complete control of my phone through the touch screen on the dash, the ability to use apple maps for navigation, and the ability to hear and send texts.  The only negative is that outside of apple's own apps and a few audio apps, few apps work with it yet. Lack of Waze support is the biggest negative but that's to be expected as apple and Google might over map apps.

Apple Maps being your only navigation app is more than just small issue.

Apple has historically been a follower, but when they do produce something, they blow away the market.

Samsung is -destroying- them in the global smart phone market.
