The Farm / Re: Follow the Prospects: Andrew Alvarez, LHP

One of the main criticisms of the Nats' farm system in recent years is the lack of viable pitching depth. Basically the 6-9 starters you can plug into the rotation after inevitable injuries and not be embarrassed. Between Irvin, Parker, Brad Lord and Alvarez that seems to be starting to change.

If he's released and signs with another team I believe the Nats are still on the hook for his contract minus the league minimum whereas if he was claimed off waivers the claiming team would assume the entirety of his contract. I can definitely see him clearing waivers and then signing with another team on a minor league deal or something like that.

Would love to get Chase Burns just for the S-tier baseball name.

oh, more or less, i was talking about who could possibly take corbin's slot in the rotation. I don't see an obvious candidate until Gray / Cavalli get healthy or Herz / Rutledge / Ward show something in the minors.
I assumed it was Cavalli, unless they really, really want to manage Parker's innings.

what's his role? Righty platoon bat / pinch runner / defensive replacement can get him a shot to get onto a roster eventually if he does well in AAA.
Maybe. Lot of teams dont have jack for the CF position. Someone might be willing to take a flier and see if they can fix his swing.

I was shocked that the Nats are 5th in pitching fWAR in MLB today.

It's not just FIP that likes them (3.70). Staff ERA is now 3.97. They've been good at keeping the ball on the ground (8th at 44.4%) and have been able to keep flies from going out (5th in HR/FB at 9.6%). The latter might be a bit lucky, and they face ATL at a launching pad, but they are 10th in balls to center. I'm not sure of the FB/LD/GB breakdown on that, but that's the deepest part of the park. They are kind of middling on pulled balls (12th) but I'd imagine a lot of that is on the ground.

This is actually them slipping a bit. A couple weeks ago they were second in fWAR behind only the Phillies.

UVA is seeded and gets to host a regional. They face Penn in game one. St John’s and Mississippi State are the other teams.

Had heard he was having some health issues but still unexpected. Just 71. Enjoyable as a player and announcer.
