That took longer than it needed.

Still very light on details. I didn't see the length of the extension mentioned anywhere.

Golden says Rizzo will speak to reporters later today. I'd guess a 3 year deal with an option for a 4th.

Rizzo is 62 so this may be his last ride.

Great news, however it'd be nice if the front office could explain, in detail, the situation with all the scouts being fired.

I wonder if the purse strings were tight on Rizzo before and part of him agreeing to come back was that he got to overhaul the department? I could be wrong obviously but I think if he had nothing to do with it he wouldn’t have came back.

Maybe they sucked? Seems like a pretty simple explanation.

Good point, that would make sense, given the circumstances.

I thought the scouts fired were all new hires within the past couple years? You can’t judge scouts that quickly.

Maybe, I tend to agree with SkinsNatFan, maybe it was tied to Rizzo coming back.

Fantastic.

I would like to see how much each organization spends on scouting and player development. I wonder if it corresponds to wins. Does Tampa and the Dodgers spend more than say the pirates and Tigers.

It seems it would be more cost effective to pour money into scouting and development and bring good young players up in your organization than spending $350 million on a player who did most of his heroics for another team and you're going to pay for his last 5 years of diminished productivity.

FWIW, a friend of mine is a scout. He has been a scout since about 2015 and changes teams about every 2 years. He started with the Nationals.

Sounds like a tough occupation.

Mike Rizzo on the @JunksRadio:
Quote
"I was always optimistic and confident that this thing would get done."

Said Mark Lerner and Alan Gottlieb never wavered in their commitment. The three of them met last week to iron out the numbers and said it took a "very short amount of time."

Quote
"I have never seen our ownership group, Mark [Lerner] especially, more engaged and more focused on this baseball team and winning another championship then they are right now."

"The narrative that they got one-foot in and one-foot out, could not be in my world, could not be more over-blown and miss-characterized."

"Because believe me, he's into it. They're all into it. They watch every game, every inning, every pitch, and I know this for a fact."

"They are extremely focused in on bringing us another World Championship and I think they are, in my mind, that they are never been more focused on being here and owning this team and winning then right now."

Quote
"I don't think this is a successful season. But it's an encouraging season."

Is Mark Lerner being engaged a good thing? Maybe he’s personally taking over scouting duties

Generally sounds good from Rizzo but let’s see what the owners actually do in the off-season.

FWIW, Mark Lerner and Rizzo were on-hand and sitting together to see Crews' awful debut in Fredricksburg.

Rizzo on The Junkies discussed the termination of scout positions[/quote]
Quote
Every year on every team, this is the time of year you are making staff changes ... we have restructured in an organizational restructuring. There are people that will be reassigned, there will be people that will be replaced [by new hires], and there will be positions that will be jobs and occupations that will be eliminated and transferred over to different departments in baseball operations. ... We made huge investments in our technology, and in manpower and brainpower to handle the technology that we have in both scouting and player development."
