First inside-the-park HR in opener since 1968

MIAMI (AP)—Emilio Bonifacio has hit the first opening-day inside-the-park homer in the major leagues in 41 years.

The Florida Marlins’ new third baseman and leadoff batter hit a drive over the head of center fielder Lastings Milledge and circled the bases for a two-run homer in the fourth inning Monday against the Washington Nationals.

The last inside-the-park homer on opening day was by Boston’s Carl Yastrzemski on April 10, 1968.

Bonifacio earned a curtain call from the crowd of 34,323 for the homer, his first in the majors.
he should be our lead-off man instead of garbage Milledge who belongs in AAA.

The Marlins duped us so bad in that deal which looked like a steal for us at the time.

I'm going to make a mental note of that crowd size for the Marlins' O.D.  I bet the Nats' will be smaller.

Nah, the Phillies fans will be out in force. Miami's too far for a road trip.  :icon_mrgreen:

anyone else find this gruesome game sadistically comical? the most hilarious play had to be Bonifacio's inside the park hr. Milledge looked like a clueless clown trying to go back and track that ball down.

how 'bout Bonifacio though?! he had the game of a lifetime.

haha wow old school SF in full effect ... everyone except for flores, zimmerman, bonafacio and speigner sucks!!!

in the past, the marlins rarely did well again finesse lefties ... if you watched lannan wasn't sharp at all.
Don't forget ace Lannan. :?

The fact that Willingham is on the bench and Milledge is starting is vomit inducing. I don't get it.

he played like that last year for us too. too bad we dealt him for a bunch of crap. we had our future 2B-man/lead-off man and bam just gave him away.

Yeah, but what are we going to do: have an outfield of Dunn/Kearns/Willingham?

Holy crap, can you imagine our outfield defense?

He was definitely off today. no excuses, that was abysmal. the defense freaked him good though. Dunn's botch in the OF set the tone for the entire game.

after one game you're ready to throw in the towel ... on everyone once again except for your boys.

just be patient man.  and as mrmadison said, that was a career day for bonafacio ... i'll guarantee you he'll go back to reality soon.

I will say this, even though I think it's too early to say we lost on that deal:

It should NOT have been made before we knew whether we'd have Dunn.  No siree.  I can understand thinking that you could plug Tex at first and have Milledge/Dukes/Willingham/Kearns in the outfield, but there was NO GUARANTEE that we'd get Tex no matter how much we paid.

So the timing on the deal was terrible.  It'd be worthwhile if we had a place for Willingham, but we do not as of now.  Olsen is not good enough to justify it.

Kearns in center, Willingham in right.  Kearns more than makes up for his lack of plus speed by making excellent reads on the ball off the bat.  As for Willingham, he's certainly better than Milledge or Dukes, especially the way those two are performing right now.

(SS) Guzman
(1B) Johnson
(3B) Zimmerman
(LF) Dunn
(CF) Kearns
(RF) Willingham
(SC) Flores
(2B) Belliard
(SP) Olsen

This.
