I don't think the Giants ever saw the A's a threat to their own market the way Angelos saw the Nationals, so perhaps the Giants didn't go out of their way to fight the A's over various rights.

Giants had the right to San Jose and kept them out of there, so there's some historic bad blood.

Why fight over TV rights when you’re trying to keep them to from having a viable alternative somewhere else in the area? The moves attempted to San Jose / Santa Clara county seemed like they would have potential, but once again, the fingerprints of Selig seemed to emerge on a territorial matter of dubious merit and to the apparent detriment of one of the teams involved:

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/733481-bud-selig-and-the-oakland-as-new-stadium-a-lack-of-leadership-and-courage

“Despite the superficially obvious solution (the A's move to San Jose), there remains a significant obstacle—the San Francisco Giants were given territorial rights over Santa Clara County (where San Jose is located) and they are not giving up their rights.  This defending of territory by the Giants has created a bitter taste in the mouths of A's fans because the Giants only own Santa Clara County because A's ownership allowed the Giants to take control of the area (which was originally shared between the two clubs) because they desired to create a stadium down there in the 1980's.”

This and the mess here seem quite the Selig legacy.

From that article it appears the A's shouldn't of given up shared rights to San Jose until the Giants move to there was official. They were premature in giving up those rights.

It looks like MLB screwed the A's back then.

I live in Santa Clara County, used to live in Fairfax County, and this area is nothing like DC-Baltimore.  The Giants own the fanbase here, far more than the O's did DC/NoVA pre-Nats.  Sports bars throughout San Jose/Santa Clara/Mountain View are all in on the Giants, very little A's support.   CalTrain, which is commuter rail and runs frequently, ends across the street from Oracle Park, with stops throughout Silicon Valley, tons of people around San Jose take it to Giants games.  MARC in DC/Baltimore is nothing like that.  And fans in the East Bay just past Oakland in Orinda, Walnut Creek, etc are also all in on the Giants, even though they're closer to Oakland.  Walnut Creek has a Giants store and is mostly SF fans. The A's would have had an uphill battle winning over fans in San Jose even with a move.

While it's much closer to SF than Baltimore is to DC, Oakland has a Baltimore problem in that the corporate market in SF and Silicon Valley is much, much larger.  One reason the Niners moved to Santa Clara was the presence of all the tech companies that pay top dollar for suites and boxes.  The A's, like the Raiders, are a working man's team, their core fan base would have screamed if they had to pay higher prices due to tech companies pushing up prices.  Much like Baltimore, Oakland is not really a Major League city, and the move out of the region makes sense, especially when so many East Bay fans are hard core Giants supporters.

Are A’s games carried on basic cable?

Yes.  The whole region gets two RSNs - NBC Sports Bay Area, which has the Giants, and NBC Sports California, which has the A's.   NBCS Bay Area is partly owned by the Giants and also carries the Warriors.  NBC Sports California has the Sacramento Kings but they don't broadcast those games into most of the Bay Area.

Ratings in the Bay Area market for the Giants are typically 4x what they are for the A's.  The A's often have the worst local ratings of the 29 American teams.  According to Forbes 2023 data, the Giants are worth 3x what the A's are.   The A's core fan base is diehard, but unsustainably small in number.

The Giants had the right to San Jose because the A's gave it to them in 1990 so they could move there.  They didn't do it but then didn't return the rights.  They're nearly as much to blame for this mess as Fisher is.  freak them.

Former Peninsula resident here.  This is entirely accurate.  The Caltrain connection does matter, especially given how close it is to Oracle, and the fact that there's no similarly functional line down the East Bay to SJ means that the A's wouldn't have had the same advantage.  (Yes, there's Amtrak; I've taken it on that line, from the Coliseum in fact.  It was late, because of course.)

Manfred now "warning" them to find a temp home for 2025-27 within the next few months.

This is getting highly dysfunctional.

How did this turn from a done deal into a clusterfreak so quickly? The A's turned out not to have enough money to fund the Vegas stadium?

SLC seems like a no brainer. No need to share or displace another team, easier travel than Sacto or Reno. Only if they still want to play with Oakland as a permanent location does it make sense to deal with Oakland

They might end up stuck wherever they go. Vegas doesn't seem to want them anymore

then they can try out SLC. It's a contender for an expansion team.

I was in the SLC area a couple of weeks ago, there's actually a crapload of craft beer brewed locally, much more than one would expect in a state that is 2/3 of an abstemious faith (albeit none of it >5% ABV)

I wonder what Oakland will charge for the last three years. The lease expires after this year. Fair market on that much land is a lot more than what they’re paying and the local voters aren’t exactly inclined to support the team

Sacramento offers the chance to retain some of the TV money and not have to play in the Colosseum.  They would stay on the same RSN they use now.

NBCSports California will still be broadcast into the Bay Area after the A's leave, and already has the Sacramento Kings.  That's the attraction - keep the Bay Area TV money without staying in that stadium.

The carriage agreements were signed when they were the Oakland As. Moving to Sacramento seems like an excuse for cable companies to renegotiate carriage rates
