Welch, you are wrong about '67.  The 4 way photo finish was Boston, Detroit, Minnesota, and Chicago. Baltimore was 6th, 15.5 games back, tied with the Senators.

You may be thinking of 1977. 97 win O team that finished tied for 2d.  1978 they were 4th with 90 wins.

How was that "hanging on"?  The game was never closer than three runs and they won by four.  The tying run was at-bat once, in the 7th and that's as close as they ever got...to tying the game.  That's hardly "hanging on".  

Now, the Marlins "hung on"...by the skin of their teeth... to win the previous game but someone "hung on" didn't make the AP report for that game.

I thought Marquis was pretty good, but with the large lead you could definitely see a change in his approach from the 1st inning to the 2nd.  But again he was solid.
