Zuck reports that Gray's MRI came back clean - muscular issue, no ligament damage.

Its probably a combination of issues. The biggest one is the belo and spin bump that is being pushed, particularly on younger players. Then the lack of rest and auxiliary sports. The inconsistency in grip of the balls. And finally, to some extent, the pitch clock.

Ultimately, a lot of this could be mitigated with the NPB tacky baseball and a concerted effort in amateur baseball to teach pitching rather than velo.
My kid was starting to think about trying to pitch in college when he was in middle school.   Started looking into high school players going to college, and it seems that being at least 6'2 and throwing mid 90s is a pre-req to get to any D1 school, and there were hundreds in that category.

If colleges and pro teams aren't going to look at anyone throwing less than 90, how do you get junior baseball academies to stop prioritizing velocity?

I don't know what the answer is.   Maybe if there was some way to encourage starters going deeper into games in the pros, it could help.   But it sure seems like we are headed to pitching rosters filled with disposable guys throwing 100 for a couple innings, getting a couple TJs and calling it a career.

I'm so glad my son switched to golf!   His prospects seem a lot better, and it feels a lot less destructive.

That’s basically what the NFL seemed to have gone towards over time as far as paying a couple key positions and the rest can be treated like cannon fodder. And for MLB, so many were chasing the long ball, which ended up with the days of roids and juicing.

It used to be a good athlete in high school would play football in the fall, basketball in the winter and baseball in the spring. Now if you're on a high school baseball team you pitch in the spring, play on the summer league team and then the fall league. That ends in October. You have team workout after that until February when tryouts start. It's a year-around sport for high school baseball players now. A pitchers arm never gets a rest.

This. ^.

Just too much wear and tear on yoking guys.  Can’t help thinking that throwing cutters at a young age does not help either.

I wonder if something like only allowing 8 or 10 pitchers to dress for a game might force pitchers to amp down to go longer.

It is like that with every sport now for elite athletes. My grandson played hockey for 9 months of the year on as many as three teams in a season. I believe he knew he wasn't elite and did not play in the summer or go to a hockey camp.

10-day for Vic.

Any updates on him?  I'm ok with Jacob Young and his incredible speed, but this is Victor's walk year.

Even when healthy Davey didn't show much of an inclination to play him and potentially accrue some sort of trade value. I don't see the Nats getting any sort of value from Robles at this point.

It seemed before he got hurt Davey decided to start Robles against lefties only.

MLB.COM lists Robles as probably returning in May.

Quote
OF Victor Robles (left hamstring strain)

Expected Return: May

Robles is rehabbing after experiencing a left hamstring strain he sustained on April 3 running from first to third. Manager Dave Martinez said the outfielder is progressing, having regained full range of motion with less tenderness in his hamstring.

Robles had returned to full health in Spring Training after back spasms limited him to just 36 games last season. He was poised for a bounce-back season before this latest setback.

Yes, it is Victor's walk-year, but I'm almost certain that Rizzo would flip him for almost anyone. If no other team wants him, let him walk.

An injury question: what happened to Jackson Rutledge? Broken ankle? Bad bruise? What?

I'm hoping that Parker is "real" and that by the All-Star Break, Cavalli, Parker, and Rutledge are in the rotation with Gore and Irvin. Gray? Maybe he will be pitching again, but the injury seems a little mysterious.

Davey with some updates:
- Gray playing catch up to 60' without pain
- Robles throwing and hitting without pain, next step is jogging
- Ruiz feeling better but lost 20lbs!!!!, he can return tomorrow and is playing catch and taking BP. Sounds like he's going to go somewhere to rehab before returning

Wood is in the line up today but Crews is still on the bench in Harrisburg. Does anyone know anything about their absences.

it has been discussed in the Crews thread. Crews got HBP last week and hasn't played since after coming out of a game. He was doing on-field drills on Sunday with a trainer.

Don't know about Wood.

With Wood, RD noted he's coming off an 18 PA stretch where he struck out 7 times. It's probably a rest and regroup day.
