Sure, but how much would fox and ESPN pay for those TV rights especially if they had their own playoffs and championship and didn't play schools outside of their league. If you could get it to 24, you'd have a viable league with TV rights worth a lot more than any school is getting now
the NFL has 32 teams. You probably could get near consensus on the top 25 or so teams, and there are probably a few others that may not be top 25 but have the bones (size, cash, alumni, geography) to be there. A league that size could put together a multi-round playoff structure to keep things lucrative.

Yeah I mean in that scenario it's basically professional football, but college football being just 30 teams is boring as freak and interest will suffer IMO.

Just have three or four levels and have relegation and promotion. That would be more interesting to me at least.

And name them after corporations rather than the universities.

doesn't mean just 30 or so teams will play. It's just that the rest will play something more like college ball than pro. Holy Cross vs UConn will still happen, and alumni will tailgate. It'll just end the farce that Appy State is competing for the same thing that Michigan is (even though I think Appy State beat Michigan when they did play).

I know, but even taking away potential crazy upsets of big teams will hurt IMO. It'll be different. We love football in this country but if you remove say, Auburn (they may not make the cut for top 30), what happens to the rivalry? It just gets super messy.

I don't think rivalries matter to the big boys anymore. I don't think Clemson-BC is a rivalry even though it's on the ACC schedule. I'm guessing real rivalry games like the Iron Bowl, Bedlam, and maybe even the Little Brown Jug will get played as a non-conference game if Auburn, OkState, or Minnesota can't make the cut.

The Iron Bowl seems kind of bullcrap if one team is a professional football team and one is playing college football. I just have a hard time seeing a "good teams only!" league forming. I think there's 3 power leagues formed once the ACC officially dies and the rest are like you said chugging along as normal. Relegation and promotion would be really fun but don't think US sports leagues are up for that.

The ACC is not going anywhere because basketball. It’s not as big as football but still big business.

The ACC might still exist but it won't matter at all. It'll become the Big East, basically. Duke and UNC are great but the rest of the basketball brands are entirely meaningless nationally outside of UVA who doesn't move the needle much besides just being good. Syracuse has the history but a HOF coach is gone. It's fine but in football it will not be a power conference at all and I wouldn't be surprised if schools like Wake and BC consider going FCS or something.

WSU/WU and OSU/OU where each teams biggest rivalry. The back yard brawl went away for years before returning. The new round of expansion shows just how little rivalries matter. I’m just saying that the same teams that had no problem leaving one conference behind won’t think twice about doing it again. This round pulled strong teams into the same conferences. I think the next round sees those teams no longer willing to subsidize the Northwestern/Vanderbilt/UVAs anymore

W&M leads Towsen 17-0 in the first. Loses 34-24. W&M scored a meaningless TD at the end.

Big upset in Chapel Hill. It’ll be the second-biggest of the day if Duke can hold on for one more quarter.

Oregon looked really good early in the game at Utah.  Didn’t see the test but they still have a shot at the playoff.  Just need to get Washington on a neutral site in the conference championship and beat them. Would be fun to see no SEC team this year but that probably won’t happen.

I’d like to see the Big10 finally left out. Do we really need to see them choke again when they have to play good team out of conference?

You are speaking off the SEC where you talk about playing nobody

Who has Michigan played again? The Big10 always gets the benefit of the doubt and then embarrasses themselves in the playoffs
