even in his prime, he only had one year when he hit over .210.

Wow, I knew he was a low avg hitter, but I didn't think that it was that low

His defense alone justifies the contract.

No one pays a premium for corner OF defense.   Also wouldn't surprise me if we're in the running for Tyler O'Neill next year.

There isn't a person on the planet who can release the firm Lerner grip on pennies and nickels like Scott Boras.   Expecting we'll see bigger and better signings in '25.

Supposedly his defense was below average the last two years. Also, if it's defense they want put Robles, Young and Thomas all in the outfield at the same time.

He is +3 DRS in the outfield the last two seasons. +18 the last three seasons.

Which of those guys is left handed?

I'm not thrilled about the signing myself but those of you who think Matt Adams would be just as good are crazy. No way Adams posts a positive wRC+, nevermind the difference in defensive capabilities. Look at OPS, not average.

As JCA pointed out, even with the sub-Mendoza line average, Gallo would have been one of our top hitters last season. He'll probably be one of our best this year too.

I think the top 6 outfielders were all right handed - thomas, Robles, Garrett, Call, young, and Meneses. Menesed and Riley Adams are righty first basemen. There really was a need for a lefty in the mix beyond Jake Alu. The power should at least give something for opposing managers to think about when they throw righties at the Nats after CJ's spot.

He fits the Adam Lind,Matt Adams, Eric Thames mold. Cheap left-handed power. I prefer this contract than the Hoskins deal.

Markey and Mikey have turned Nats fans into the half drunk dude that thinks all the girls have somehow become much prettier because it's closing time...

This roster is garbage and remains an insult to the fan base.  There is no getting around that.  I don't care how much lipstick you care to put on this pig...

What was wrong with Joc Pederson? If he holding tight to the $19million salary he made last year with the Giants? Did the Nats make him an offer?

That was a qualifying offer he accepted from the Giants that's not likely to be matched this season.  Still, he's worth more than Gallo, so seriously doubt the Lerners will make him any kind of offer.

better fielder. Best combination of power and D among guys with sub-Mendoza line averages.

https://fantasy.fangraphs.com/rhys-hoskins-and-joey-gallo-find-new-homes/

As interesting as the assessment of what the impact of playing half his home games at Nats Park will have on Gallo (hint - better than Target Field) is the more general discussion of how Nats Park plays for lefties and righties.

tl;dr version - park is good for lefties in almost every type of plate appearance outcome, except BB, but for righties, it is just about as negative. Thus, overall park factor is neutral.

When you think about it, guys like Soto, Schwarber, Harper, and Dunn have thrived here, so maybe that's reality. It also might help explain CJ's power last year, and even Keibert. Nice to get another lefty. Bring on Wood.

How does a park affect walks?

I honestly couldn't tell you. Maybe wind, background, lighting? Maybe some parks pitchers pitch to contact more? But there are park effects modelled for BBs.
