On the bullpen front, the Nats could be down at least one candidate early in the season. Skipper Davey Martinez said Wednesday that righty Mason Thompson will be shut down for the next two weeks before being reevaluated for an elbow injury (X link via Golden). Martinez conceded that the team is “a little concerned” about the issue but declined to go into further details.

Hasn't been right since the early season abuse culminating in a blow up on 4/27 at the Mets.

I don’t think it was abuse as much as lack of major league talent.

50+% GB rate is nice, but not a big K guy. His 2022 had good actual results even if the defense independent numbers were middling. He had a decent stretch in April last year, was getting Ks as well as GBs, and throws hard enough. Did seem like he had several multiple inning outings mostly with 2 days rest or more, then blew up after a 3 inning outing with 1 day off. That stretch starting 4/25 looks like some force feeding.

Feb. 14: RHP Cade Cavalli throws second bullpen session
Cavalli, who underwent Tommy John surgery last March, threw his first bullpen session on Feb. 12 and the second two days later. The initial plan is for Cavalli to throw 20 pitches on Mondays and Fridays at a higher intensity and 15 pitches at a lighter intensity on Wednesdays.

“It felt amazing,” Cavalli, the Nationals’ No. 4 prospect, said. “Arm’s been responding well, so I’m very grateful.”

Floro not yet pitching in games due to shoulder tightness

Floro threw 15 pitches off the mound at 70 percent on Monday. He has not appeared in game action yet because of discomfort following a live bullpen session on Feb. 18.
