I hate to do this, but I'm gonna take that to mean that his stuff is so marginal that if he's a tad bit off, he gets destroyed. I'd love to be proved wrong.

I'd have to say that is an accurate assessment (though he does have some pretty nice secondary pitches when he is on by no means marginal).  He needs his best stuff to be successful and when he has it, he could be a decent part of an MLB rotation.  Without looking at it in depth at the moment, I would venture to also guess that coming inside against (and getting beat by) lefties has been a major flaw as well.  With him, though, its all about consistency and he needs to show that he has some.
