College Football 2023-2024
« Topic Start: August 05, 2023, 02:14:30 PM »
RIP PAC 12.

Down to 4 teams as Washington and Oregon go to the Big Ten (now with 18 schools) and Arizona, Arizona St., Utah and Colorado head to Big 12 (now with 16 schools)

I despise these huge conferences. If you don't play every team in your conference every year in football and home and home in hoops, then you aren't in a conference. You are in label for tv

UCLA, USC, Stanford, and Cal should join the ACC given how meaningless conference names are

Walter Camp to you.

Somehow, a big 10 with 18 teams is only slightly less weird than a Atlantic Coast Conference with the best traditional hoops programs on the West coast

I’ve lost track of who went where. And probably won’t figure it out before I die.

UCLA and Southern Cal joined the Big Ten. As to the other two, I wonder how Cal would react to being in a conference with a Jesuit school (Boston College). Not that they can afford to be picky these days!

I'll guess they end up in a conference with Boise St. Stanford and Cal are tougher to figure.

Correct. I think it’s generally expected those two may land in the Mountain West. Stanford and Cal, who knows.

Ivy League. After all, we have a couple of state schools already in Cornell and UPenn.

:couch:

I've got a great idea! since the B1G has 18 teams, take in Cal and Stanford too, then set up 2 divisions - old Big 10 and new Big 10.

Hey that UPenn. Not the State Pen up in Happy Valley.

Cal and Stanford actually seem like natural fits for the Big Ten. But who knows. Maybe the ACC will take them so they can use more jet fuel also and catch up to the other conferences.

I think Stanford goes independent. None of the conferences that are an academic fit make sense for travel. Cal- who knows.

Cal and Stanford being excluded should make all of the ACC schools clamoring to get out reconsider- Cal is bigger than UVA and UNC and in a bigger market

they are better as a pair for a new conference. Saves travel money, gets decent exposure in a good market. I don't think Cal by itself is a very strong add anywhere. It does have a good academic profile.

What conference though? Both blocked MWC schools from the Pac-12 based on academics. The best fits academically are the Big10 who don’t want them or the ACC which would be a travel nightmare.

I think Stanford may end up as an independent. No clue what to do with Cal.

That would be their last choice, I guess.   Stanford is not getting a big football tv deal, so they'd be saying goodbye to a lot of money.   But I guess they don't get invited to a conference with a good tv contract, they might not have a choice.

I heard this Mike Huegenin (so?) on Orlando talk radio opining about the latest moves.  He is a college football writer.  He was unsure where Stanford and Cal would land. He said Stanford used to have cache but their current leadership has fallen behind. They don’t use NIL much. And they have their first football transfer portal player this season. Just one. So yea they don’t sound attractive to the major conferences. He also said Oregon State and Wash State would end up in the Mountain West. On the subject of Florida State he said they had no where to go now.

He said the next big issue will be the haves in the SEC and Big Ten raising a ruckus about sharing revenue equally with the have nots in their conferences. Which is basically FSU’s beef.

He's already wrong about OSU- the Big12 is in discussion with OSU and SDSU. I think it's more likely the MW dissolves and the 9 teams that vote to dissolve it join the Pac12 because the Pac12 has autonomy

So under that scenario does the new Pac12 part of the Power 5?  I would think not for football.

Under the scenarios where the NCAA and BCS rules list conferences. The can kick the pack out the next go around, but for now they are in (
