Prediction: we're going to get articles saying Span could hit 30 home runs if he wanted to, a la Ichiro

And they will be lies

I agree there should be Robot Umps. It'd make rolling with Ramos, who can't frame pitches, 10x more palatable

I doubt framing actually works that well.

Span
SPANNING
1st   Anthony "Hitman" Rendon doubled to deep left, Denard Span scored.
1st   King Ian Desmond singled to shallow left, Anthony "Hitman" Rendon scored.
1st   J Rollins homered to right.   2   1
1st   R Howard singled to deep center, C Utley to second, C Utley scored, R Howard to second on error by center fielder D Span.   2   2
3rd   Jayson Werth singled to left, Denard Span scored.
5th   Denard Span homered to the upper deck in right.

Washington Nationals  4
Philadelphia Phillies   2

THE GAME DID NOT START UNTIL 7:43 PM DUE TO LITTLE LEAGUE CEREMONIES.

Bob Carpenter: "When Denard Span scores 2 runs in a game, the Nationals are 18-1 this year... They are 1-0 when he's scored 3 runs."

Damn, Span ate his Wheaties today.

Fillies announcers (include Good Old Matt Stairs!) can't remember another ball hit into the second deck this season. Power? Or: hit it solid and the ball goies a loooong way.

I think it only works for borderline pitches, if at all. The pitch in question was NOT a borderline pitch.

Just a perfect swing, hit it right on the screws

Pitches directly down the middle have been called balls before. Almost invariably, the ball was received poorly. Bad framing can hurt, especially on "obvious" strikes.

From watching on tv that pitch looked like a ball, you expect the ump to perfectly see where the ball intersects an invisible rectangle?

You can't be serious - that ball was down the MIDDLE of the plate. Calling that a ball is inexcusable.  Framing is not a consideration in that instance. Blaming Ramos is nonsensical.

Besides that, it's ABSURD that "framing" a pitch is more important than it's freaking location. What is this? 1908??!!!

Home plate umpires suck. We don't even ask them to be accurate, we just ask them to be consistent and they can't even do that. Add in their ridiculous egos and their inability to accept or hear any criticism and it's a joke this game still tolerates their nonsense.

You and I are on the same page - time to go to automatic balls and strikes and put an end to this garbage once and for all.

I would like to see each team get 2 challenges like tennis for balls and strikes.  If they are right they get to keep using them.
