Now if the NYY could find a way to bring back Jerry Garcia, I'd be more impressed (and most of you would be bored in no more than 5 minutes).

That gives the Braves 7 guys for their rotation if both Minor and Beachy are ready to go.

No way Lopez cracks the rotation in Atlanta with Beachy, Minor, and Teheran there.

I'm guessing he's injury/trade cover in case Beachy and Teheran need more time.  Still gives them a glut of MLB pitching.

I'm a little surprised they haven't tried to deal Lowe this offseason. I'm sure a pitching desperate team like the Yankees would pay a decent price to get him.

A groundball pitcher with that atrocious infield would be death.  Add in 30m due him over 2 years and the Braves aren't getting squat unless they pick up a big portion of that.

It's not like Atlanta's infield is all that great defensively either. Uggla is awful, Chipper can't move, and Gonzalez isn't getting any younger.

Hey, you know which team supposedly has a good infield defense now and a bunch of money...

We'll have to see about that. If a certain shortstop and third baseman airmail throws over a certain newly signed first baseman like they did they did the recently departed former first baseman, that team will be in for a long season.

That's why I'm hoping a trade is in the works with Atlanta, LA Dodgers, Minnesota, Chicago White Sox etc.  There's a few teams with excess that may be willing to move a solid veteran.

We could probably get Kenshin Krapakami from Atlanta for a platypus that's been dead for two weeks, although I'd prefer Gavin Floyd or Nick Blackburn.

Does Punxatawny Phil have any other use now that he's predicted the end of winter?  Offer them Phil or a RTBNL (rodent to be named later).

1 woodchuck
2 onions, sliced
1/2 cup celery, sliced
Flour
Vinegar
Pepper Cloves

Clean woodchuck; remove glands; cut into serving pieces. Soak overnight in a solution of equal parts of water and vinegar with addition of one sliced onion and a little salt. Drain, wash, and wipe. Parboil 20 minutes, drain, and cover with fresh boiling water. Add one sliced onion, celery, a few cloves, and salt and pepper to taste. Cook until tender; thicken gravy with flour.

Look at Kawakami's numbers from both seasons.  I'm not sure why he would be moved since only two stats really dropped (BABIP and LOB%) and those would be the cause of the jump in WHIP and ERA respectively:

2009:  32 G, 25 GS, 156.1 IP, 6.04 K/9, 3.28 BB/9, 0.86 HR/9, K/BB 1.84, .284 BABIP, 73.3% LOB, 3.86 ERA, 4.21 FIP, 4.61 xFIP, 1.34 WHIP, 1.7 WAR
2010:  18 G, 16 GS, 87.1 IP, 6.08 K/9, 3.30 BB/9, 1.03 HR/9, K/BB 1.84, .304 BABIP, 63.3% LOB, 5.15 ERA, 4.35 FIP, 4.56 xFIP, 1.49 WHIP, 0.8 WAR

Our current possible SP with better stats last year:
FIP:  Strasburg, Gorzelanny, Livan and Stammen.
xFIP:  Stras, JZ, Stammen, Gorzelanny, Lannan.
WHIP:  Stras, JZ, Livan, Martin, Stammen
K/9:  Stras, Gorzelanny, JZ
BB/9:  Martin, Stras, Livan, Stammen, JZ, Lannan
K/BB: Stras, Martin, JZ, Stammen

Kawakami would add more solid depth to the rotation.  The above just shows how good Stras is, how well JZ pitched despite a bad start or two when he came back, and that Stammen really does deserve a shot to see if he can get through the lineup 3 times consistently.

As is my fantasy team.  I've lost Pettite, Marcum, and Putz due to league switches or retirements.  Still have Matt :az: Thornton, Joe Nathan, CJ Wilson, Jake McGee (he may close for TB).

Lots of teams will be looking to trade the Yankees an overpaid starter now.  We should get in on that and send them their hometown guy Marquis.

Maybe they'll take on Lowe or even Zambrano.

They've been riding CC pretty hard these past couple of years.  If he goes down, the top of their rotation will be AJ Burnett and Phil Hughes.  That might be about as good as what we've got.  LOL.

Hughes would be a our #1 this year.  Take a look at his excellent 09 in the pen and good 10 as a full season starter for the first time at the MLB level.  Then remember that he's only 24.

They might be able to get most of a season out of Clemens before he goes to Leavenworth.

President of baseball operations Andy MacPhail talked to a group of Baltimore School of Law students today, and The Baltimore Suns' Keith Van Valkenburg has the goods. MacPhail acknowledged that the team will not "be buying No. 1 pitchers" because they're expensive and fragile by the time they hit free agency. "It's just a bad place for us to spend our money."

MacPhail said the team intends to stay the course and build from within, especially on the mound. "Given the economics of it, it's the only approach. It's not just the right approach, it's the only approach. We have to stick with it."
The franchise is not able to sustain a $140MM payroll, and MacPhail doesn't foresee a salary cap anytime soon. "If you want a cap, OK, but in my opinion that means you're going to have no baseball for at least a year. Let's not fool ourselves into thinking the players will cave."

ESPN.com's Keith Law tells Steve Melewski of MASNsports.com that he doesn't like what the Orioles have done this offseason. Vladimir Guerrero is, in Law's estimation, "in the toaster" even if he's not yet toast. Blocking Nolan Reimold and Felix Pie with Guerrero doesn't make sense to Law.

I'll comment on that - it's a good theory and one that's been around for a while - you grow your pitchers and you buy your bats.

Growing pitchers is easier said than done, though.  And it's not like the O's have been all that successful at buying bats, either.

On Keith Law's comments - who cares about blocking 2 guys who are probably no better than 4th outfielders.  Actually - Pie and Luke Scott remind me of our situation in LF with Bernadina and Morse.  Only their manager is going to make the decision to play offense over defense in LF - probably the right decision, both for them and for us.
