It would be awesome if this guy emerges as a building block for the future and possible 2B of the future once House takes over 3B. We need some of the prospects besides “The Big 3” to become solid big leaguers.
Lipscomb was perhaps the most unlikely 2024 Opening Day rookie. He spent most of 2023 at Double-A, where he performed slightly above the league average despite pretty terrible plate discipline. He swung at a 58% clip last year, which is very concerning, though he covers enough of the zone to have kept his strikeout rate down below 20%. At some point there is going to be a reckoning for all that chase and Lipscomb will have to make an adjustment. While his feel for oppo contact is aesthetically pleasing, it's tough to project enough offense here for him to profile at third base. He has fantastic range at third but his arm isn't great. Lipscomb one-hops a lot of throws and often takes an extra beat to get rid of the baseball, which you don't have the luxury of doing at the big league level. He played both middle infield positions during spring training and has a shot to develop into a viable second baseman. The rebuilding Nats have skipped Lipscomb over Triple-A, and there are going to be some early-career growing pains as he attempts to adjust to major league stuff. Eventually he could be a multi-positional utility guy, but the rate of chase here is concerning enough to round down a bit because it creates pretty serious bust risk.

Zuck reports that Senzel will be the everyday 3B when he returns from injury, possibly very soon. No word on what this means for Lipscomb but I'd imagine he goes back to Rochester so he can play everyday.
Lipscomb has the yips throwing from 3rd base. It was obvious after his throw to first today that Gallo saved him on.
