Nationals 2021 All Stars
« Topic Start: June 18, 2021, 11:37:58 AM »
Any guesses?  I'd think Hand at a minimum. Turner isn't currently in the top 3 in Shortstop voting but should be a manager's selection.  Soto is fifth and probably also makes it as a manager's selection. Scherzer is probably borderline.

And of course there's Espino :)

I think  they get 1, and it is likely Soto.  Tatis and Crawford make it, then it is a question of what team needs to have a player added. For Turner, it may come down who goes from Colorado.  It's not clear they have a better candidate than Story, but maybe Bard goes because of the story (no pun intended).   I don't see them having 4 SSs.  Betts and Soto are having good enough years and are huge names,  so I see them going even if not voted on.  Hand probably doesn't make it on shear number of saves and his other numbers aren't spectacular.  Scherzer gets named but passes due to health.

They're below .500 this year and were below .500 last year.  One guy, two max.  Not Hand.  Soto most likely, even though Turner deserves it more.  Scherzer also reasonably likely, especially if he comes back and gets a good start in before voting ends.  He probably won't go, but he might get an offer.

I would certainly think so.

Didn’t Frank “Hondo” Howard of the Washington Senators set a record back in the late 1960’s for 10 homers in a week or was it 10 homers in 10 games? Am I the only geezer around here that remembers this?  I wonder where Schwarber is with breaking that record?

Have a great day y’all! HERE COME THE NAAAAAATS!!!

I definitely remember. Over a one week stretch in May 1968, which was NOT a "hitters year," Frank hit 10 dingers in 20 ABs. Think he hit at least one in 6 consecutive games.

Hondo was on the Today Show that year and it started the Senators tradition of painting the seats for his homers and for Mike Eptein's blasts!

According to the Nationals, Kyle Schwarber is one of three players, along with Barry Bonds in 2001 and Sammy Sosa in 1998, to hit 15 home runs in a 17-game stretch. According to MLB, Schwarber is the second player, along with Frank Howard in 1968, to hit 11 home runs in a nine-game span. According to Baseball-Reference, Schwarber’s 1.465 OPS batting first makes him the best leadoff hitter of all time.

sounds like we are going to start a Kyle Schwarber Facts meme.

Sticky stuff pitchers use on baseballs slips away when Kyle Schwarber leads off an inning.

We're not a very good fanbase at stuffing the ballot box.

this probably explains why the White Sox and Cubs do well.

Wasn't it the Royals a few years ago who goosed with the online voting system and at some point 6-7 of their players were leading the voting?

I recall a clip of a late 80s A’s game with fans putting bunches on customized punchboards

Absolutely, Soto arrives in 7th and hits a 2 run homer to tie the game. Trea arrives in the 9th and hits the game winning HR.  :D Schwarber won’t play but will hit the game winner in the WS later this year. 👍

Turners going to come in later in the game as a pinch runner on a double switch, get a couple innings at short, and 1 PA

Soto should stay home to rest his shoulder. There is something wrong that he doesn't lift homers.

For Trea, this is a great "at last!" Well deserved. Best shortstop in baseball.

Nats are 27th out of 30 teams in runs scored. And yet have three position players going to the All Star game. If that’s not an indictment of the rest of the lineup I don’t know what is. Gomes has had a very good year.
