Do ya remember the NY Titans playing there?
Yes. ABC used to broadcast Titans games to DC. And, incide ntally, Harry Wismer, the Titans founding owner, sold his 20% share of the Redskins for $200,000 to start the Titans. Sold to a Canadian millionaire named Jack Kent Cooke. How Cooke came to be majority partner witghout spending anything more, and how Marshall's sons lost control of the team, is a long an weird story.
Summary?
The Washington Redskins made a much larger profit than Marshall ever reported, because Marshall paid the profits to himself as a president's salary, and bought "offices", meaning luxury houses, in every NFL city. Edward Bennett Williams, Marshall's executor, bought back Marshall's shares with the team's profits while letting Cooke's ownership share grow and grow.
Williams hired Otto (Toot) Graham, Vince Lombardi, and then George Allen. They built Redskins Park, and made the Redskins a winner and a very lucrative business.
Poor Wismer didn't have enough money to make much of the Titans.
