Maybe they think they can flip him at the deadline for a better prospect than what they gave up?
several articles I read speculating on Canha as a potential FA this offseason said the option was a reasonable price in the abstract but that MOAC (Milwaukee's owners are cheap). I thought that were he to hit the market, a 2 year deal in the $8 million per year range might have made sense for the Nats. He could help the transition in the OF and 1st/dh while guys develop.

tl;dr - Baumann likes the deal both ways. Brewers get a guy they don't have to put on the 40 man roster who throws hard and might have a usable slider with some work. Brewers are good at fixing pitchers so got something for a guy that didn't fit in their budget who played a position they have some other talent at.

Tigers needed another outfielder / dh, play in a division where it is easy to contend, and got an "on base machine" they could bat leadoff, keep for a year, and is an overall average player.
Quote
Even with Canha’s age, unremarkable power and defense, he does the most important thing a hitter can do — get on base — very well, enough to make him more or less an average big leaguer overall. And in this day and age, $11.5 million over one year is not that much to pay for a player of his talents.

The QO list is out:
Shohei Ohtani (Angels)
Cody Bellinger (Cubs)
Matt Chapman (Blue Jays)
Sonny Gray (Twins)
Josh Hader (Padres)
Aaron Nola (Phillies)
Blake Snell (Padres)

That makes Hoskins more attractive if he's on the Nats' radar.

Sign them all on one year pillow deals – OK, maybe two for Ohtani – – and that takes care of a good chunk of the draft.

You don't give up the draft pick but probably means he will get more $.  Which seems to be a red light for the current ownership.

On a recent trip, I was reading one of those histories of the nationals/senators that covered the 19 century versions. They talked about a particular owner, who made all sorts of indications of doing right by the team and fans get ended up, lining his own pockets, with the team eventually folding. The current ownership iteration appears to have a litmus test before it.

I suspect the Phils don't want Hoskins back mostly because Harper will be at first base the rest of his career.

Hoskins was a major liability defensively at 1B.  Harper has done well in a limited time. Baseball Savanat has him ranked #8.  Not sure if Outs Above Average is cumulative.  The Phillies have no room for Hoskins as DH as they are stuck with Schwarber there.  Castellanos probably should be a DH also.

I would be happy if the Nats signed Hoskins for a year or two and kept Dom.  That would improve the offense and keep good defense at 1B.  You could play Hoskins at 1B against some lefties also and fill in with someone else at DH.

Hoskins is a career OPS+ of 125 and was 123 in 2022.  So he is a good hitter with power although very streaky. No one pays attention to RBIs anymore.

Well, Joey is still cheap for another year or two. Is Dom worth the extra $3+ million over Joey?

Joey can play some LF if you want to keep him.

Why do we care about keeping Dom? Id rather keep Chavis.

I doubt Hoskins is an option, but I imagine he'd have to split some time at DH

Hoskins is not a Werth signing if we are talking just 2 years. I could maybe see a splurge on a Werth signing if there's a pitcher out there or if we got into a surprise position piece. More likely, it's lower level fill ins until there's a better read on the prospects.

They were the Wagner brothers. Shirley Povich covers them in "The Washington Senators" (1954), but someone at the last DC Baseball History meeting was selling a self-published history of the Wagner years. Have you found something other than Povich's book?

Nola wants big money and big years.  7 years $30 million per year. Don’t think anyone will go that high/long.

Good comp.  Would have to be a contender or wannabe contender willing to spend $. Cubs? Braves?  Yankees? And of course always the Doyers.

No way I'm spending that for Nola. He's always been healthy but he's pitched a lot of innings over the last number of years. He's due for an injury. Even healthy, not worth that.

Phils have announced Harper is at first base to stay which means they definitely won't be in the Hoskins discussion.

MLB GM meetings were canceled this afternoon and evening after a stomach bug took out at least 10% of the attendees.

this is a decent move on their part. I was really impressed with their CF rookie they called up. Marsh is good out there for them as well. As it is, they have to play Castellanos out there with Schwarbs at DH. Harper I think has said he likes 1st because he's in every ground ball play, and he didn't look bad over there.

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2024-top-50-mlb-free-agents/

FG's top 50. Ben Clemens ranks them, profiles are by multiple staff writers, it includes contract estimates.  Discusses the major drop off in quality from last year's class, especially among hitter. Overall, last year's class projected as 121 fWAR in 2023. This year's top 50 projects as 90 fWAR. Top of the class is weak, too, besides Ohtani (46 fWAR for the top 10 vs. 32). Pitching is the strength of the class. Yamamoto and Imanaga are big non-MLB additions. Yamamoto is the #2 on this list behind Ohtani. 14 of the top 30 are starting pitchers, 21 of the top 50, plus there are several relievers. No destination predictions.

If Yamamoto is available for under 200 million, theres no reason for like 20 teams to not be in on him
