Random Stuff (2024)
« Topic Start: January 24, 2024, 05:01:25 PM »
Could have sworn we used to have a thread like this?

Anyway. Just wanted to share that we put our ten-year-old cat down yesterday. He has had a long history of neurological issues (epilepsy since he was 2) but had been doing fine in recent years. Over the last couple of months he began to have a number of issues that culminated in him stopping eating and drinking a few days ago. Numerous vet visits and tests, with vet bills in the thousands of dollars were unable to help us find a root cause. After having him hospitalized on Monday suffering from severe dehydration, with no improvement yesterday, we made the very difficult decision to let him go. Ten years seems way too short. My last cat was almost 19 when cancer took him.

He has been my sidekick for the last decade, spending most of his time sitting next to me in one room or another, or begging to play. His adopted brother is getting all the attention now.

I miss him.

That’s terrible.  And why we are not getting another dog.  Hard to let them go.

sorry Imref.

There's a Random Stuff thread in uncensored, btw, but it's ok here.

My condolences, imref. I find it gets easier eventually, but I still find myself deeply missing my cat who died in the late 00s at random, unexpected times.

Very sorry to hear this. I suppose the pain of loss is the price we pay for all those years of love and companionship.

You remember the movie Alien Nation? I think it was James Caan as a human cop and Mandy Patinkin as an Alien "Slag" from a ship of escaped enslaved aliens. Sour milk was like alcohol to slags, and there's a scene where Patinkin goes over Caan's apartment and spots the milk which is so sour it has chunks in it. He eyes it, shows it to Caan for permission, kind of like pulling out some fine scotch.

At any rate, today I pulled out the last of a 2 week old quart of skim today to pour it onto my cereal . It had tasted suspicious yesterday so I first poured a little into glass. As I was pouring it, it swirled a bit like it was thickening so I dumped it. Didn't smell awful, but I half expected Mandy Patinkin to knock on my door

For sure, but, if you're ever up in NoVA on the weekend, there's a farmer's market in Leesburg that has a guy selling maple syrup from sugar maples on the west side of the Blue Ridge. He's got a couple of different grades, one of which is significantly darker than what you usual find for maple syrup. It's a very strong flavor and you generally love it or hate it. I'm on the side of really liking it as an alternative to the purer, lighter varieties.

MDS IIRC knows his maple syrup. One of his many interests. Eclectic.

Earthquake this morning was mildly interesting.  Was in the kitchen and heard some rattling very near.  Hunted around a bit and found a stack of glass plates making the noise.  Nobody else was in the house, figured it was an earthquake and went online but didn't find any mention.  I think I was too soon.  Couldn't feel it, just heard the plates.

A bunch of friends in NY / NJ felt it. There was a 4.0 aftershock around 6 PM as well.
