Seven innings, no runs against the Astros. Not bad at all.

Is anyone concerned that he only goes 5.1 innings per start.  Seems the hitters will eventually learn to not swing.  Great stuff but still lack command.

This season, no. If he's like this in 2025, maybe. Early in his career, Max didnt go real deep either

he's around 18 pitches per inning. Frandsen has been saying his issue is he can't get swing and misses with his fastball even though it has decent movement. That's what was impressive about yesterday's 1st 2 innings. 4 Ks on fastballs.

I am ok with a 5-6 inning pitcher for now. 90-110 pitches is fine as he builds up. Hopefully, he begins to take that closer to 7 innings, but a basic 3 man backend of a bullpen should be able to ride his good performances and a little offense home to some wins.

Starters don't go 120 pitches or so like they used to.  Gore was great yesterday but got pulled with what historically would be considered a moderate pitch count. (104).

The LSU coach disagrees :)

It’s hard to field a competitive team if you have a top of the rotation guy who pitches only five innings. Of course he has a couple years to work on this.

fWIW, his 5.4 IP/GS is 67th among 119 starters with 10 or more starts.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/majors/2023-starter-pitching.shtml

Only 18 guys are 6.0 innings or more per start.  Only 28 guys have 90 innings. Patrick Corbin is next as 89 2/3. I'm not too concerned about him only going a bit more than 5 1/3 per start as long as he's making all his starts.

ESPN:
Quote
He has had a weird every-other-start-is-a-good-one thing going. Look at his runs allowed since June 10: 5, 0, 5, 1, 7, 0 (lifted early because of a rain delay), 5, 0. Overall, his whiff (74th percentile) and strikeout rates (79th percentile) are strong indicators, while his control continues to be his biggest problem. It's a learning curve, but there is still No. 2 starter potential here. -- Schoenfield

Just popping in again, Big Mac is having a breakthrough season as far as I can see. Some inconsistency but that's life with young starting pitchers. If he takes another step up next year then look out. Cy Young material.

Thanks for checking back. He's not super efficient and has had some trouble putting guys away after getting ahead, but he's pretty dominant at least half the time. Some toughness too. Doesn't meltdown when there's a misplay

We should redo the poll done back in April about trading Soto for Gore straight up. I have to imagine the results would be different this time.

i'm not ready to write Gore off. First off, this is his first full season in the majors. Second, he's 24.

He's been incredibly inconsistent, but has shown significant promise. Before last night's start, he went 6IP with 2ER in his previous start, and allowed 1 or fewer runs in half of his previous 12 starts.

I'm definitely not writing him off either. I just thought the poll results were crazy back in April and so feel a bit validated now  :)

Doubtful. Even if you swapped Gore and Soto, this isnt a playoff team and the Lerners wont spend to make it one.

Also, Soto is clearly not a cornerstone piece to build a franchise around. He's the piece you add to get over the hump. But I suspect that come next season, when the Padres underwhelm, we're going to hear stories similar to whats coming out of the White Sox right now.

I think the spirit of the question is who is the more valuable trade piece (otherwise you could argue any 40+ FV prospect would be preferable over Soto). Obviously Soto is the better player, but is he so much better that you would prefer to be trading him over Gore and his extra team control? I said yes back then and definitely say yes today.

At his point you absolutely trade gore for Soto then flip Soto for another five prospects
