hope my brother is ready. I get nervous a bit because he's overweight, 68, and does some shoveling as well as operating the snow blower. I don't know if I should wish for my neice's partner to be around to help on the shoveling, or whether I should wish for them to fly back to LA before the storm.

A few years ago we hired someone to shovel for my father in law and called it a Christmas present. We keep on paying the renewal and claiming that it just charged without us realizing.  He’s old overweight and a stubborn do it yourself guy, but he’s also cheap

This is what led to my FIL having a fatal heart attack.

Sorry to hear.  When I was a kid my little league coach died this way.  Doesn't snow where I live now, but every time I shoveled when I lived back east I thought about it.

We used to joke about widowmaker snow when I was younger. Now I’m happy it never snows here

GFS showed virtually no snow for DC in yesterday's morning run, but now shows about 8" in this morning's run.  Via the wxrisk guy:

Seeing as the forecast low for Saturday is above freezing I'm not sure I'm buying the boom scenario (even if DCA is a heat island) :?

I'll go drag out and gas up the snowblower thereby decreasing the chance of snow in the Land of Sublime Living™, Gaithersburg Maryland,  to zero.

We’re flying out of DCA Monday.  So no doubt a blizzard.

i'm flying out of IAD on Monday. Whatever we get should clear out by Saturday afternoon / evening, so unless you are flying to New England or western PA, you should be fine.

CWG's 1 PM ET update:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2024/01/03/east-coast-weekend-storm-snow/

Quote
Models continue to struggle with the strength of the storm that will form in the Mid-Atlantic and slip south of New England. The American GFS model has a slightly farther offshore and weaker low. The European model, meanwhile, depicts a closer pass of a stronger low pressure system, but closer passes usually mean more warm air pulled inland from off the ocean. However, the stronger storm system in that scenario would lead to heavier precipitation, which could help cool the lower atmosphere.

Both main weather models now agree on a sharp transition zone between rain and snow near Interstate 95 from roughly Washington to just south of New York City. Along and east of I-95, more rain than snow is probable. Thirty to 60 miles to the northwest, chances increase for significant snowfall.

Models are converging on the idea of an initial period snow of snow as the storm begins in portions of the Mid-Atlantic — mainly west of I-95. It might only last a few hours, but snow could fall heavily enough to disrupt travel for a time. Thereafter, precipitation may switch to rain in lower elevations.

Sounds like me. I actually enjoy shoveling snow. Use to do it as a pre-teen for spare change and early teen years.

Keep a close eye on the forecasts. The Wxrisk guy just posted his latest on Facebook. It looks more and more like a major storm for I-81 into central PA with mostly rain toward DC and Baltimore.

“Models continue to struggle”.  They can just trot that out for virtually every storm that approached DC.

No snow back here in Florida.  We head north tomorrow morning.  The Orlando airport has been setting capacity record sober the holidays so hoping everyone has left by tomorrow. ;).

Sober? I am guessing Boston College didn't play in the Citrus Bowl.
