Much thanks Chief!
Last season, I bought my daughter a full set of the Nats inaugural season baseball cards. With inarguable logic, she laid them out on the floor, and settled immediately on Zach Day as her favorite. It was a hard lesson in the realities of life on the day Zach was traded to Colorado last year.
Thought we've been to a few games as a family, today was the first time just she and I were able to go. It was our extreme good fortune that the Nats picked up Day this year, and so it became our mission today to get his autograph on her most treasured card.
We entered promptly at stadium opening today, and went directly to autograph row. (We got to watch some of the Nats actually having a batting practice, a rare event). Nobody had gotten a single autograph, when I spotted Zach walking out of the dugout towards the outfield. I called to him by name, he looked and I pointed at my daughter, who was waiving his card, and told him "#1 fan", pointing at her. He came right over, and signed her card, and allowed me to take the picture. She was ecstatic. He signed about 10 more autographs before heading out.
5 minutes later, she got a ball from Jose Guillen (who never had any other interaction with any fans) and our day was nearly complete, with only the requisite Nats victory to cap it off. A great day at the ballpark!
