If we get the chance, I wouldn't have a problem with giving Strasburg like $8 million. I want him in our system.

If Beckham got 6.5 mil, and Strasburg is a better prospect (higher potential + Pitcher), neither would I.

Beckham's $6.5 million is different than what Strasburg would get. As a two-sport star, MLB allows a drafting team to spread the bonus out over multiple years. The players gets the full $6.5M, it's spread out in a manner that makes its present value closer to the slot recommended bonus would be if it was paid in one year.

Strasburg's $8M would be a one year, waaaaaaaaay over slot deal.

Hell, if the Nats get any of the Top 3 picks then next year's Draft is going to be seriously fun to keep track of.

That's not really an "if".

Got this question answered today at BA's chat:

Quote
Q:  NatsFan from Nats Land asks:
Should I be hoping my team loses the rest of their games so we can get Strasburg or is Alex White a good enough consolation prize?

A:  John Manuel: Strasburg's the class of the '09 draft but White is a legit option for sure. He's 96 mph with his fastball regularly and when he stays on top of his slider it's a heck of a second pitch. His split was big for him this year against LH hitters, so a team that doesn't like split-finger fastballs would probably shy away from him. I love him for the velo, the easy delivery and the athleticism and consider him a very solid consolation prize. But he's not Strasburg.

I can see it now. We'll end up getting the second or third pick and a lot of the people on this board will be pissed because they'll have to wait 4-5 years on a high school player to develop. It's going to happen.

I hope not. I know Detwiler flopped but I'd much prefer college pitchers.

I couldn't care less about the player's age. As long as we get the best available, I'm happy.

Thank the gods we have Milledge and Zimmerman back. Our offense has been a true powerhouse since their return.

#1 pick. #1 pick. #1 pick. #1 pick. #1 pick.

Does anyone know how close to Major League ready Strasburg is projected to be?  I wonder, if we drafted him, how quickly he would be ready, maybe 2010 sometime.  If 2010, we would have a lot of pieces falling into place (fingers crossed) that season.

I've been one of the grouchiest people at this board, but I'm not going to nag if the Nats simply can't draft Strasburg and have to get a H.S. pitcher like White.

The only thing that'd piss me off is if they have the #1 pick and either don't draft Strasburg because of signability concerns or draft him and fail to sign him because they don't want to pay him.

From everything I've read, he's really close to being ML-ready.  I'd figure they'd call him up in the middle of 2010 like the Giants did with Lincecum.

San Diego - best pitcher in baseball and one of the best first basemen in baseball - that's just embarrassing. If Peavy could get some run support we may be able to pull away.

And Seattle has Ichiro.  Advantage: Nats.

Nobody to drive him in, unless you like Vidro, but they have King Felix and Bedard. Advantage: Still Nats.

We face crappy starting pitching all week but it doesn't matter with this team. They suck against all comers, young or old, good or bad.

Strasburg has to be the #1 pick.

If its a position player, Mychal Givens out of Tampa will be right in the mix. He was named the best position player at the showcase last month, along with being named I believe, the #2 pitcher. He's a 5 tool kid at shortstop.

There's nothing wrong with continuing to draft pitching at the top. Pitching wins, and pitching is what teams want in trades. As the team gets closer to competing if we have stockpiled arms we can then trade them for help in other areas.

Sign Crow, draft Strasburg and we have two legitimate frontline starters on the team. The rest of the pitching prospects fall in line as middle/back end of the rotation guys and the team is taking shape. With the amount of guys that fall into that second group, we'd have some arms available to shore up other areas of need.
