Possibly a Hybrid (not the electric gas kind), the combine the back of one car, the front of another car and the sides of yet another car?

looks like a Porsche front and Mustang (or vette) back

Looks like a precursor to the Lotus Exige (the back anyway)

The Lotus and Opel GT guesses are the closest...but it really wasn't a very fair question, since these cars are apparently extremely rare in general, and are virtually nonexistent in the U.S. 

It's a 1969 Saab Sonnet II. 

(I didn't know either...a friend sent me the picture and challenged me to identify it, and I guessed Opel GT).
