Really?

I'm not asking sarcastically - I don't follow the farm system as religiously as some of y'all and just don't know what kind of reports/stats justify saying VanAllen has "clearly" better pitches than Lannan.

Lannan isn't blessed with any great pitches. His main asset is between his ears not his shoulders.

VanAllen brings a low- to mid-90’s four-seam fastball, a two-seamer, and a changeup to go with his newly mastered slider.

I found that in this article from a few weeks back talking about VanAllen's promotion to AA and his stuff. He had adopted a curve ball last year but it wasn't doing anything for him so he developed a nasty slider over the off-season.

Generally agree, but Lannan also has excellent control.  I'm not sure how much of that is mental vs. just a talent gift.

His backdoor breaking ball against righties is really unique. It's got late cutting action and rarely do the batters expect it to be a strike. It's actually got a loop and a cut. Really cool pitch.

I think that's a baby slider.

His college coach was on before Lannan's last Mets start. He made it sound like Lannan never had great stuff and aways had to work on his control.

What Lannan does so well is mix his pitches up - keeping the batters off balance -- and he is about as cool a customer on the mound as I've seen in a long time - Lannan's definitely got mental and physical gifts ... it's great to see him doing so well -- Sounds live VanAllen could be the real deal too ...  love it ...

Van Allen got rocked last night by Akron.  Pitched 1.2 innings, gave up 5 runs and 7 hits.  Good lesson for the kid.

I agree.  He's got to get grounded again - a record like his could get to ones head.  A shalacking like this is what the doctor ordered.

I was at this game and it wasn't pretty.  He started off decent striking out two in the first inning.  Everything that could go wrong did so in the 2nd inning.  2 errors  (Desmond and Castro) didn't help VanAllen's situation any.

Castro is playing for the Yankees' AAA team and is batting .240 with 0 HR and 10 RBIs in 154 ABs.
Dorta is playing for the Pirates' AA team and is batting .273 with 4 HR and 17 RBIs in 165 ABs.

Why would he think it was Bernie Castro?

Because I thought he was still in our system?

Uh, the dude who was actually at a recent Senators game was certainly talking about Offilio Castro, unless he went in some time machine and watched some game back when Bernie Castro was in our system. :P

VanAllen was placed on the 7-day DL yesterday, retroactive to May 29th. What's the point of even putting him on the DL?

Maybe it's long term.
