Cory VanAllen
« Topic Start: April 29, 2008, 07:43:43 PM »
Cory VanAllen pitched yet another gem tonight at Potomac in the first game of a doubleheader - 7 innings of a scoreless pitchers duel between the Winston-Salem Warthogs.  He's now pitched 12 innings without a run and has a 0.66 ERA.   :o

He should get promoted to AA soon.  Man we are so loaded with pitching prospects, a bunch of lefties too.

I would imagine that he is two more outstanding starts away from AA promotion.  If he goes 5-0 and keeps his era under 2.00, he'll be in a Harrisburg uni before the end of May.

I didn't see this guy playing this well so early in the year.  Maybe he's the John Lannan of the minors this year?  J. Zimmermann started out bright as a candle, but perhaps is settling in to his real zone.  We'll see.

He must be pretty good, they already named a belt after him.  ;)

I know they promoted a catcher, Solano, from Hagerstown to Potomac to fill the void left by Ivany who got promoted to AA.

I sat behind the plate when he started at Hagerstown and he is anything but soft tossing.

To be in the rotation? Right now Potomac's rotation is missing one: Detwiler, Zimmermann, Nunez and Alaniz (:worship:)

cVa with another solid start.  In fact, "solid" may be an understatement.  7 ip, 2 h, 0 er, 2 bb, 8 k's in a win vs Erie tonight.

Yeah, that's pretty masterful. I really don't understand why he was taken out, though. We should be letting these guys get some complete games from time to time so their stamina can improve. I hate all of the babying of pitchers these days.

Awesome start. He's out-perform Mike O'Connor and Matt Chico NOW.

VanAllen picked up his third win in only his third start in AA ball last night: 6 IP 7 H 4 R 3 ER 1 BB 2 SO

He is now 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 3 starts with Harrisburg. He is on the fast track to the Majors just like Lannan last year. If he keeps it up we will see him in the Majors before the end of the year.

Here are his combined numbers in both A/AA ball this season:
46 IP 31 H 11 R 6 ER 2 HR 11 BB 32 SO (6-0, 1.17 ERA, .188 Opp BA, 0.91 WHIP)

He has been as dominant as one could possibly be.

How can that be?  All of our starters are perfect and won't lose any games between now and then.  There won't be any room for the prospects!!  Might as well trade them for players to be named later.

May 12, Kevin Goldstein, Baseball Prospectus:

Quote
Cory VanAllen, LHP, Double-A Harrisburg (Nationals)
A fifth-round pick out of Baylor in 2006, VanAllen’s body, left-handedness, and stuff provided plenty of promise, but despite being a college product, he was still and unrefined product, which showed last year when he allowed 145 hits in 113 2/3 IP. Sent to High-A to begin the year, the 23-year-old has taken a major step forward by showing improved movement on his fastball, better off-speed stuff, and improved command. After allowing just two earned runs in five showings for Potomac, the Nats quickly moved him up to Double-A, and the success has continued as on Saturday, he fired seven shutout innings while allowing two hits and striking out eight. The Nationals have a long-term plan to compete based on developing young talent, and VanAllen is starting to put himself into those plans as a dependable back-end starter

Its kinda sobering to read a glowing report like that and then to have it conclude with the guy being a dependable back end starter

It seems like we hear this too often about our prospects. I'd like to hear about bona fide #1's and #2's in our system for a change.

Who's to say he is only a back-end starter? I beg to differ. Everyone though Lannan was a 4 or 5 at best. That appears to be wrong. VanAllen is on the exact same track as Lannan and clearly has better "stuff".

Really?

I'm not asking sarcastically - I don't follow the farm system as religiously as some of y'all and just don't know what kind of reports/stats justify saying VanAllen has "clearly" better pitches than Lannan.
