His new high-leg delivery is starting to impress teams. The Braves, for
example, noticed that the new maneuver helped Chico add more miles to
his fastball. In the past, the Braves knew Chico as a guy who threw in the
low-to-mid 80s. But they were surprised to see that Chico was throwing in
the 90s during Spring Training.
If Wainwright can pitch a full season like he did in the second half in 2007,
he'll be a Cy Young Award contender. He believes he can. After a slow start
in '07, Wainwright posted a 2.71 ERA with 77 strikeouts, 30 walks and only
four homers allowed in 99 2/3 innings after the All-Star break. He pitched
two excellent games against the Nationals last season, but got minimal help
from his offense and bullpen, and the Cardinals lost both games. Wainwright's
first '07 start was washed out after three innings.
