I remember reading somewhere about college pitchers making the transition to the pros and that the difference in balls was a major concern for MLB teams. For some reason Chad Hutchinson comes to mind.

I'm not a big fan of the big seams for that reason.  One thing that gets a lot of attention is the impact of aluminum bats.  But, while the NCAA doesn't regulate the seams, it does regulate the coefficient-of-restitution (COR).  The COR measures the rebound speed of the ball, when shot from and air cannon at 85 mph at a wood wall.  The COR is the percentage of the impact velocity it as it rebounds.  A college baseball loses about 3% more speed on the rebound than does an MLB ball.  I personally have doubts how much this offsets the positive impact of aluminum bats.  This is especially true since the aluminum bats aren't aluminum - they have carbon fiber skeletons and a much greater whipping action than even the maple bats used in MLB today.  The technology in the NCAA bats today is phenomenal.

Maybe we should start and NCAA thread.

Is this Miller's first ML start?

Actually, 14th.  He's stunk since his September 2006 callup, and was even worse before being demoted with extreme prejudice last year.  His ERA has never been lower than 5.63, and WHIP never lower than 1.73.  He walks 2 batters every 3 innings.  If he lasts through May, he'll still end the year leading all of MLB in hit batsmen.  His strong point is that he gives batters happy feet because nobody has any idea of where the ball is going.

I hope we get to face him before he goes back to the minors then....

Going by stats alone,he doesn't appear to be anywhere near ready to pitch in the bigs.

He's not.  He's at least 2 years away.  Even then, he projects to be #3 if he ever is ready.  Helluva acquisition Marlins got back to Cabrera and Willis, huh?  Instead of "Marlins" the jerseys should say "Morons".

Lefty Andrew Miller misses the target by about 2 feet, hangs a curve that doesn't break, and Church hits the 1st Mets HR of the season.  3-0 Mets.

Miller got a strike on Perez when the pitch hit the bat - behind and above his head.

If he's their savior, what's he saving them from? 5th place in the NL East?

Now that is a darn lie. Church couldn't save Pedro the Cockfighter's hammy!

they got a real intense Church vs. Milledge thing going on in the Mets forum.  much more intense than what we have on our side of the deal.  every time Church or Milledge does anything good or bad, there is a seperate thread and argument about it.

I don't think the Mets fans realize that Milledge faced Tim Hudson and Cole Hamels (both elite pitchers in their own right), and Church faced Andrew Miller(who shouldn't be in the majors in the first place) and some other guy.   lol.

Only 18 pitches in the 3rd for Miller, 1 run, 3 hits (Wright thrown out at the plate for the 1st out).

Oh, and Miller is all fastballs now since he only has a slider and fastball, can't develop a change, and the slider is missing the target, no joke, by an average of about 4 feet.

Miller goes 4.1 IP, 8 H (4 2b and a HR), 2 BB, 5 ER

OBA: 471
OOBP: .526
OSLG: .882
OOPS: 1.408
ERA: 10.39
WHIP: 2.31

I got rid of all sharp objects, but I gotta have some rope, sleeping pills or hemlock around here somewhere.

EDIT:  Vandenhurk is the only Marlins starter with an ERA south of 10.  His sits at 9.00.

Pedro's MRI just came back - out 4 to 6 weeks.  I know it's classless, but I'm grinning.

With the way Pedro was pitching before exiting that game, his injury might be a bad thing for the Nats!

In 4.1 IP, he threw 90 pitches somewhere between the dugouts.  He finished the game with 3 strikes hitting the bat of batters trying to dive away from wild pitches.  If Elais Sports keeps that stat, I bet it's a single game record.
