No scotch ale. Cream stout, holiday porter, cranberry lambic, winter ale, boston lager, and old fezziwig.

I would gladly trade the boston lager (which sucks) for a scotch ale.

I'll have to get a 12 beers of christmas from saranac at some point to get a rauchbier fix

Victory, Troegs, Penn Brewing - PA middle-sized breweries are very high quality. Lots of great microbrews and LionsHead is one of the best cheapies.

I'll always be a sucker for the VT breweries, for some reason I just associate Vermont with good beer. Although I just had my first DFH chicory stout after reading this thread- that may be the best dark beer I'veever had.

I don't usually go for DFH, but I'll try anything once. After Shiner Bock, the best dark beer in the world is local Schwartzbier at a German beer hall

Shiner Bock?   One of the most overrated beers on the planet, trailing only Rolling Rock and Yuengling, perhaps.

Why do you hate PA so much although Rolling Rock is made by the evil Coors company now. Yuengling (according to wikipedia), is the only pre-Prohibition style American lager in mass production today. So it's awesome

I don't hate PA at all, Shiner Bock is Texas anyway.

The beer is not even a real Bock beer.  I lived in Texas for two years, and people are crazy about Shiner beers.  They are also crazy about Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, and JC Penney.  What do these things have in common?  They are Texas based companies, and Texans are complete suckers for home state stuff.  I was really excited to taste a Shiner Bock for the first time, as I love dark flavorful beers, but after the first taste, I was sorely disappointed.  Like they took a regular beer and put caramel coloring in it.  I did not like it at all.

I had brief rolling rock phase, then one day I woke up and wondered what the hell I was thinking.  I think PA folks like Yeungling and Rolling Rock because they are made in PA and have clever marketing, not because they have decent taste.

Here are the Yeungling tasting notes, a little better than Shiner Bock, and I agree with that:

Sorry to sound so harsh, I'm pretty agreeable generally, but I can't let future generations be fooled into accepting the Shiner Bock myth.

i think that is where my hate of Sam Adams comes from, because I hate to admit it to myself. Some of their other stuff is good.  The only time I buy it is if it comes in an odd shaped glass I want to steal for my collection. Got a light-bulby looking one and Octoberfest looking mug. If only I could etch off the "Adams" and replace it with "Jackson"...

Tom, I think you are drinking Haterade Lager

It's my favorite beer. I'm sure gourmet chefs like mac and cheese or Wendy's sometimes, you know?

I consider myself pretty knowledgable about beer, and for a PA resident subject to socialist alcohol taxes, I try to stock pretty good stuff. But if Shiner Bock brings back good memories and tastes great on a hot day, that's too bad

Since I'm utterly exhausted and staying in, I'm gonna polish off my Saranac 6 pack sampler left over from football a week or two ago.

I got to try the Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout. I still prefer Young's.

However, that 10% alcohol level packs quite a punch after two or three and it has a nice head to it.

Had Samuel Smith's (I think that was the name) Oatmeal Stout Last night. Very smooth and mild. I liked it a lot, however, my first impression is usually not the same as my second.

Samuel Smith's! Now there's a fine brewery. Best bitters by far I had in England, and that Oatmeal Stout is organic!!! I like their red too.

I love how macro-beer marketing resorts to "hey, at least you can drink it". 

"drinkability"
"clean finish"
"no after taste"
"no bitter beer face"

you would think that nobody would voluntarily drink this stuff based on advertising. its like drinking it is something you have to do so you might as well find the least sucky one.

it would be like mcdonalds saying "we dont give you diarrhea" as their ad campaign
