They overpaid, but had to do something to try to rebuild credibility with their fan base and with other potential free agents.

Just like the Orioles, noboby really wants to go there, it's not believed they have the pieces in place to become a winning franchise again.

And everybody's got $8m from XM radio and another $15 on the way from the Nats sale, so you're seeing a spurt of salary bidding going on.

I can't wait for the GM meetings to see if Bowden can deal some of our logjammed 2nd basemen or outfielders.

Overpaid, yes, but the entire $39 millions is insurable, which makes it a good risk and probably the reason why they upped the price on a shorter term.
